Jeremiah 1
In brief
Jeremiah 1 tells of the prophet's call, in the kingdom of Judah, a few decades before the fall of Jerusalem. God tells him that he knew him and set him apart before he was born. Jeremiah feels too young and does not know how to speak, but God promises to put his words in his mouth and to be with him. Two visions, the almond branch and the boiling pot, announce that God watches over his word and that judgment is coming. Jeremiah is sent out, sure that his opponents will not defeat him.

1The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, one of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin.
2Yahweh’s word came to him in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.
3It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, to the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, to the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month.
4Now Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,
5“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I sanctified you. I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
6Then I said, “Ah, Lord Yahweh! Behold, I don’t know how to speak; for I am a child.”
7But Yahweh said to me, “Don’t say, ‘I am a child;’ for you must go to whomever I send you, and you must say whatever I command you.
8Don’t be afraid because of them, for I am with you to rescue you,” says Yahweh.
9Then Yahweh stretched out his hand, and touched my mouth. Then Yahweh said to me, “Behold, I have put my words in your mouth.
10Behold, I have today set you over the nations and over the kingdoms, to uproot and to tear down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.”
11Moreover Yahweh’s word came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” I said, “I see a branch of an almond tree.”
12Then Yahweh said to me, “You have seen well; for I watch over my word to perform it.”
13Yahweh’s word came to me the second time, saying, “What do you see?” I said, “I see a boiling cauldron; and it is tipping away from the north.”
14Then Yahweh said to me, “Out of the north, evil will break out on all the inhabitants of the land.
15For, behold, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north,” says Yahweh. “They will come, and they will each set his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all its walls all around, and against all the cities of Judah.
16I will utter my judgments against them concerning all their wickedness, in that they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, and worshiped the works of their own hands.
17“You therefore put your belt on your waist, arise, and say to them all that I command you. Don’t be dismayed at them, lest I dismay you before them.
18For, behold, I have made you today a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against its princes, against its priests, and against the people of the land.
19They will fight against you, but they will not prevail against you; for I am with you”, says Yahweh, “to rescue you.”
Key verses
“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I sanctified you. I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
God states that he knew Jeremiah and consecrated him before he was born. The call does not come from the prophet's abilities but from God's decision. The verse is often quoted to speak of the value of every life before God.
Then I said, “Ah, Lord Yahweh! Behold, I don’t know how to speak; for I am a child.” But Yahweh said to me, “Don’t say, ‘I am a child;’ for you must go to whomever I send you, and you must say whatever I command you. Don’t be afraid because of them, for I am with you to rescue you,” says Yahweh.
Jeremiah objects that he is a child and cannot speak. God does not deny his weakness, he takes away the excuse: Jeremiah will go wherever he is sent, because God is with him.
Then Yahweh stretched out his hand, and touched my mouth. Then Yahweh said to me, “Behold, I have put my words in your mouth. Behold, I have today set you over the nations and over the kingdoms, to uproot and to tear down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.”
God touches Jeremiah's mouth and puts his words in it. The mission is twofold: to uproot and tear down, then to build and plant. The prophet announces judgment, but also rebuilding.
Then Yahweh said to me, “You have seen well; for I watch over my word to perform it.”
Playing on the similarity between the almond tree and the verb for watching, God promises that he watches over his word to carry it out. What he says always comes to pass.
They will fight against you, but they will not prevail against you; for I am with you”, says Yahweh, “to rescue you.”
Jeremiah will be fought, but his opponents will not prevail against him, because God is with him. The promise does not say he will be spared the attacks, but that he will hold firm.

Frequently asked questions about Jeremiah 1
What does Jeremiah 1:5 mean?
God tells Jeremiah that he knew him, consecrated him and appointed him a prophet even before he was born. The verse states that Jeremiah's call comes from God's initiative. Many also see in it the idea that every person is known and wanted by God, while remembering that this text is addressed first to Jeremiah for his mission.
Why does Jeremiah say he is too young?
Jeremiah feels unable to speak before kings and the people, and calls himself a child. God does not dispute his frailty, but asks him not to use it as an excuse: he will go and say what God commands, because God is with him. Several biblical figures, such as Moses, react the same way.
What do the almond branch and the boiling pot represent in Jeremiah 1?
The almond branch announces that God watches over his word to carry it out: the Hebrew word for almond sounds like the one meaning to watch. The boiling pot, tilting from the north, announces a disaster coming against Jerusalem from the peoples of the north. Both visions confirm that Jeremiah's message is serious and that it will happen.
