Living by the Comforting Spirit

5 min read

Introduction

The church is the one place in the world where you can truly be yourself, with no mask, no pretending. A place where what is imperfect does not matter, because the sinner there is fully forgiven. But staying rooted in Christ does not depend on your own strength alone. Jesus promised it: he sent you another Comforter, another Advocate, the Holy Spirit. This message invites you to discover what changes when your life is led by the Spirit, day to day, in your identity, in your struggles, in your mornings.

Message Outline

1. A ministry of reconciliation

  • 2 Corinthians 5 says it plainly: Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.
  • If you are wondering what God is calling you to, there is only one place in the Bible where it says you have received a ministry, and this is it.
  • Being a reconciler means refusing inner conflict and saying, "I am reconciled with Christ, I can be reconciled with others."
  • After 28 years of marriage with Dominique, the preacher testifies to this: reconciliation is a path, never a finished achievement.

2. Rooted in Christ, a new identity

  • A tree with dead roots ends up without fruit. What matters most is not what can be seen, but the invisible reality within you: Christ.
  • Your identity is no longer tied to your past, your failures, or the labels others have given you. You are what God says you are.
  • Whatever you have done, God does not define you by what you have or have not done, you are a new creation in Jesus Christ.
  • Living out this new identity is only possible through someone God sent: the Holy Spirit.

3. Receiving the Comforter promised by Jesus

  • In John 14, Jesus promises another Comforter, the Spirit of truth, who remains with his own and will be in them.
  • When you accepted Christ, you received the Trinity: the love of the Father, the cross of the Son, and the wisdom of the Holy Spirit.
  • The Spirit comes to fight for you, to defend you, to comfort you, to lift you up, to guide you, to help you decide.
  • He is a person, not some vague force. The Bible says not to grieve him, and you can only grieve a person. You can talk to him.

4. Walking by the Spirit (Galatians 5)

  • Galatians 5:16-25 lays out the conflict: the flesh desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh.
  • The flesh seeks immediate satisfaction; the Spirit produces holiness, love, and purity.
  • After his baptism, Jesus receives his identity as the beloved Son. Immediately, Satan comes to question it. God's promise comes, and doubt follows.
  • What seems attractive does not always come from God. Walking by the Spirit means adopting a whole new way of life.

5. The fruit of the Spirit and self-control

  • Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control: that is the fruit the Spirit produces in you.
  • In a family, in a demanding job, humanly speaking, you will not manage on your own. You need the Spirit's revelation to live free.
  • The hardest one is self-control. It is not a performance, it is a fruit.
  • Three words from the Bible for you today: forgiveness for your past, new life for today, new hope for your future.

6. Praying every morning to be with God

  • Take time every morning to pray. Invite the Spirit: "Fill me with your love, your peace, your self-control."
  • Do not pray to go looking for God, pray to be with God. Hand over to him ahead of time everything you will face in the day.
  • Being filled with the Spirit is not an option like in a car, it is essential.
  • Lift up your hands like a child to his father: "Look at me. I am imperfect, you know my struggles. I refuse shame, I give you everything."

Key Takeaways

  • You have received a ministry: the ministry of reconciliation.
  • Your identity in Christ replaces the story your past tells about you.
  • The Holy Spirit is a person (Advocate, Comforter, Guide), who already lives in you if you have received Jesus.
  • The flesh and the Spirit are opposed: the more you are filled with the Spirit, the more you see the flesh rise up against him.
  • Praying to be with God, every morning, transforms the entire day.

Personal Application

  1. Who do you need to be reconciled with this week, remembering that Christ has already reconciled you to himself?
  2. What label from your past are you still trying to carry, even though God declares you a new creation?
  3. Do you take time to talk to the Holy Spirit, or only to the Father and Jesus? What do you want to say to him today?
  4. What have you thought about most this week? Has that thought taken the place God should hold at the center?
  5. What simple habit can you put in place tomorrow morning to be with God before you start your day?

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to "walk by the Spirit" in practice?

It means adopting a whole new way of life, where you no longer act on your own strength or your immediate desires, but where you let the Holy Spirit direct your decisions, your thoughts, and your relationships, working together with him every day in prayer.

Can you talk directly to the Holy Spirit?

Yes. The Bible says not to grieve him, and you can only grieve a person. The Holy Spirit is a divine person, sent by the Father in the name of Jesus. You can invite him in, ask him to guide you, talk to him the way you talk to the Father or to Jesus.

How can I know if I am filled with the Spirit?

Look at the fruit growing in your life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). This fruit does not come from effort alone: it grows when you take time every day to be with God and let yourself be led by his Spirit.
