How did Noel Robinson get started?

Noel Robinson grew up in north-west London, where he attended a Church of God of Prophecy congregation. A guitarist from childhood, he also played double bass in a youth orchestra and studied jazz improvisation and composition. He became a guitarist on a British TV gospel show, then musical director of gospel programmes on BBC television and radio, before directing the music for Ron Kenoly.

In the late 1990s he joined Graham Kendrick as a guitarist on the Prayer for Revival tour. His first album, O Taste and See (1996), was self-financed and mixed an R&B flavour with songs meant for congregations. Worthy in This Place (2001) and Garment of Praise (2006) followed with Nu Image, then Devoted (2013), which features Tim Hughes and Guvna B among its guests.

What makes Noel Robinson distinctive?

His identity rests on a blend of contemporary worship, gospel and soul, inherited from his early years in jazz and orchestral music. He has partnered with Spring Harvest, Reinhard Bonnke's Christ for All Nations, the Baptist Assembly, the Elim church network and the BBC's Songs of Praise.

He founded the Kingdom Worship Movement, whose Renewal Worship Encounters have marked their tenth anniversary. He also likes to surround himself with other voices: Lou Fellingham and Donna Akodu join him on the single We Seek Your Kingdom (2021), and Philippa Hanna on Joy Unspeakable.
