Shane & Shane is a worship duo made up of Shane Barnard and Shane Everett, two Texan musicians who met at Texas A&M University, where Barnard led worship at the Breakaway student gathering. The duo has been active since 2001 and its first album under this name, Psalms, came out in 2002 on Inpop Records. The repertoire grew around psalms and hymns, with Pages (2007), Everything Is Different (2009), The One You Need (2011) and Bring Your Nothing (2013).
It continued this work with Psalms II (2015), then with hymn albums, before releasing Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs, Vol. 1 in 2021. A version recorded live at Liberty University followed in 2023. Shane & Shane is also behind The Worship Initiative, an online platform for learning to play worship songs rooted in God's Word. How did Shane & Shane begin?
Shane Barnard and Shane Everett met at Texas A&M University. Barnard led worship there at the Breakaway student gathering, which Everett joined. Barnard first recorded as a solo artist, with Everett on harmonies, before the two took the name Shane & Shane together.
After Psalms (2002), the duo released Carry Away (2003) and Upstairs (2004), then Pages (2007), on Inpop Records. They moved to Fair Trade with The One You Need (2011).
What makes Shane & Shane distinctive?
Shane & Shane set biblical texts and hymns to music so that the congregation can sing them. The albums Psalms and Psalms II take up the psalms, while their hymn albums arrange old hymns, like Be Thou My Vision. Their platform The Worship Initiative offers lessons for learning these songs, with a free trial.
The duo also teams up with other voices: on Though You Slay Me, a clip from a sermon by pastor John Piper accompanies the song.
Where should you start to discover Shane & Shane?
Start with Psalm 23 (Surely Goodness, Surely Mercy), from Psalms II, then listen to Before the Throne of God Above and Be Thou My Vision, two hymns arranged by the duo. Continue with Though You Slay Me, featuring John Piper, then with All Sufficient Merit, recorded at Liberty University.
