Adam in the Bible

Story, name meaning and life lessons

In brief

Adam is the first man, formed by God from the dust of the ground and made alive by his breath. God places him in the garden of Eden and gives him a companion. But Adam disobeys by eating the forbidden fruit, and sin enters the world. Yet God seeks him out, clothes him and announces a promise. The New Testament presents Jesus Christ as the one who repairs what Adam's fall broke.

What does the name Adam mean?

The Hebrew word adam means "man" and sounds like adamah, the ground. Genesis 2:7 draws this connection: God forms man from the dust of the ground, and the name recalls his origin.

The story of Adam

  1. Formed by God

    Genesis 2:4-17

God forms man from the dust of the ground and breathes into his nostrils the breath of life. He places him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. He gives him everything he may eat, with one single limit: the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

  2. A Helper Suitable for Him

    Genesis 2:18-25

God declares that it is not good for man to be alone. Adam names the animals, but none is a match for him. God then forms the woman from one of his ribs and brings her to him. Adam recognizes in her his own flesh and bones. They are naked and feel no shame.

  3. The Disobedience

    Genesis 3:1-13

The serpent casts doubt on God's word. The woman eats the forbidden fruit and gives some to Adam, who eats too. Their eyes are opened and they hide. God calls to the man: “Where are you?” Adam admits he was afraid and shifts the blame onto the woman.

  4. The Promise and the Consequences

    Genesis 3:14-24

God announces consequences to the serpent, to the woman and to Adam, whose work will be painful until he returns to the dust. But he promises that the woman's offspring will crush the serpent's head. God clothes them in garments of skin before sending them out of the garden.

  5. Adam and Christ

    Romans 5:12-19

Paul explains that sin entered the world through one man, and death with it. He contrasts Adam with Jesus Christ: through the disobedience of one, many were made sinners, but through the obedience of one, many will be made righteous. The grace of God overflows where sin had abounded, and Christ brings life.

What Adam teaches us

  • We are created by God and depend on his breath: our life has worth because God willed it.
  • Sin begins when we doubt God's word, then try to hide from him.
  • God seeks out man and asks "Where are you?": he takes the initiative in reconciliation.
  • In Christ, the second Adam, grace overcomes the fault of the first.
