In brief
Bezalel, son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, lived in the time of Moses during the journey through the wilderness. God chose him by name and filled him with his Spirit to lead the building of the tabernacle and its furnishings: the ark, the lampstand, the altars. Together with Oholiab, he also received the gift of teaching. He is remembered as proof that the work of human hands, offered to God, can be a true service carried out by the power of the Spirit.
What does the name Bezalel mean?
The name Bezalel is generally linked to the Hebrew meaning in the shadow of God or under the protection of God. The Bible does not comment on the name, but it stresses that God called him personally: the Lord says he has chosen Bezalel (Exodus 31:2).
The story of Bezalel
Chosen by God and filled with his Spirit
Exodus 31:1-6On Mount Sinai, the Lord tells Moses that he has chosen Bezalel, son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. He has filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, understanding and knowledge to work in gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood. God also gives him an assistant, Oholiab of the tribe of Dan, and puts skill in the hearts of all the able craftsmen.
A precise mission: everything God commanded
Exodus 31:7-11The task entrusted to Bezalel is spelled out in detail: the tent of meeting, the ark of the covenant with its mercy seat, the table, the lampstand of pure gold, the altar of incense, the altar of burnt offering, the basin, Aaron's sacred garments, the anointing oil and the incense. Nothing is left to human invention: the craftsmen must follow every command the Lord has given.
Presented to the people, gifted to teach
Exodus 35:30-35After the episode of the golden calf and the renewal of the covenant, Moses presents Bezalel to the whole assembly of Israel. He reminds them that the Lord has chosen him and filled him with his Spirit. He adds one detail: God has given him, along with Oholiab, the ability to teach. Bezalel therefore does not work alone; he trains other craftsmen in carving, embroidery and weaving.
More than enough offerings
Exodus 36:1-7Bezalel, Oholiab and the skilled men receive from Moses the freewill offerings of the people. Every morning, more are brought. The craftsmen then come to tell Moses that the people are bringing much more than is needed to do the work the Lord commanded. Moses has it announced throughout the camp that they must stop bringing gifts, because there is more than enough.
The ark and the furnishings of the sanctuary
Exodus 37:1-9Bezalel himself makes the ark of acacia wood, two and a half cubits long, overlays it with pure gold and fits on it the mercy seat topped with two golden cherubim. The following chapters show him making the table, the lampstand, the altar of incense and the altar of burnt offering, following the pattern Moses received.
Complete obedience
Exodus 38:22The account sums up his work in one sentence: Bezalel made everything the Lord had commanded Moses. Centuries later, 2 Chronicles 1:5 still mentions the bronze altar Bezalel had made, standing at Gibeon, before which Solomon and the assembly sought the Lord. His faithful work served the worship of several generations.
