Eve in the Bible

Story, name meaning and life lessons

In brief

Eve is the first woman, formed by God to be a helper suitable for Adam. She lives with him in the garden of Eden. Deceived by the serpent, she eats the forbidden fruit and gives some to her husband. God sends them out of the garden, but announces that an offspring of the woman will crush the serpent's head. Adam names her Eve, because she will be the mother of all the living. She gives birth to Cain, Abel, then Seth.

What does the name Eve mean?

According to Genesis 3:20, Adam calls his wife Eve because she was the mother of all the living. Her Hebrew name is generally linked to the word meaning "life."

The story of Eve

  1. Formed from the Man

    Genesis 2:18-25

God sees that it is not good for man to be alone. He causes a deep sleep to fall on Adam, takes one of his ribs and forms a woman, whom he brings to him. Adam rejoices over this flesh of his flesh. Both of them are naked and feel no shame.

  2. The Temptation

    Genesis 3:1-6

The serpent questions the woman about God's word and claims that she will not die. She sees that the fruit is good to eat, pleasing to the eye and desirable for gaining wisdom. She takes some, eats it and gives some to her husband, who was with her, and he eats.

  3. The Consequences

    Genesis 3:7-19

Their eyes are opened, they sew fig leaves together and hide. When God questions her, the woman answers that the serpent deceived her. God pronounces consequences, but promises that an offspring of the woman will crush the serpent's head. This promise leaves hope from the very beginning.

  4. Mother of All the Living

    Genesis 3:20-24

Adam calls his wife Eve, because she is the mother of all the living. God makes garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothes them. Then he sends them out of the garden of Eden, and posts cherubim to guard the way to the tree of life.

  5. Cain, Abel and Seth

    Genesis 4:1-2, 25

Eve gives birth to Cain and says she has gotten a man with the help of the Lord. She then bears Abel. After Abel's death at the hand of Cain, she gives birth to another son, Seth, whom she receives as an offspring given by God in place of Abel.

What Eve teaches us

  • God's word is reliable: the doubt the serpent sows begins with a question about what God said.
  • Each of us answers for our choices, and hiding or blaming others repairs nothing.
  • Even in the fall, God announces a promise of victory: he does not leave humanity without hope.
  • God keeps on giving life, as Eve acknowledges at the birth of her children.
