Many people search for a prayer for the dead. The Bible does not invite us to pray for those who have died: it asks us to entrust ourselves to God, who is just and merciful, and to turn to him in mourning. These prayers are for you who are weeping. Tell God your pain, without rushing, and receive his comfort and the hope of the resurrection.

Prayers

Stay Close to Me in My Grief

Lord, my heart is broken and I struggle to find words. You know how heavy this absence is. Stay close to me today, as you promised to the brokenhearted. Give me strength to do simple things: to get up, to eat, to talk to those around me. Comfort my family too, and help us support one another. I do not ask you to make me understand everything right away, only not to let go of my hand. In Jesus' name, amen.

Psalm 34:18

I Place My Mourning in Your Hands

Father, I place in your hands my mourning and everything I cannot carry. My times are in your hand. I bow before you: you are just, you are good, and you know better than I do about the one I have lost. I let go of the bitterness and the regrets that torment me, and of the words I did not say. Forgive me what needs to be forgiven, and help me forgive. Teach me to live with this emptiness, one day at a time, leaning on you. Give me your peace, which surpasses all understanding. In Jesus' name, amen.

Psalm 31:15

You Are the Resurrection and the Life

Lord Jesus, you wept at the tomb of a friend, so you understand my pain. Thank you for conquering death by your resurrection. You are the resurrection and the life, and whoever believes in you will live, even if he dies. This promise is my hope. Strengthen my faith when grief returns in waves. Thank you for the memories, for the years lived together, for the love given and received. Until the day I see you, let my life be filled with gratitude and turned toward you. I praise you, living Savior. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

Can we pray for the dead?

The Bible does not teach us to pray for those who have died. It teaches that our salvation comes from God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8) and that each person answers for their life before him (Hebrews 9:27). Rather than praying for the deceased, we entrust ourselves to a just God and we pray for those who remain.

What should I say to God when I am grieving?

Tell him the truth: your sadness, your anger, your questions. Jesus himself wept at the tomb of Lazarus (John 11:35), and the psalms leave plenty of room for lament. God does not ask you to pray correctly, but to come to him. Ask him for his presence, his comfort and people to walk with you.

What does the Bible say about life after death?

The Bible announces that Jesus has conquered death and that those who believe in him receive eternal life (John 3:16; John 11:25-26). Paul writes that we do not grieve without hope for those who have died believing (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14). This hope does not remove grief, but it lights it.
