In the evening, when silence returns, worries return too. This page is for you if you struggle to fall asleep or simply want to end your day with God. Tell him what is on your mind, thank him for what went well, hand over what remains unfinished, then rest: he is the one who keeps watch, not you.

Prayers

A Simple Evening Prayer

Lord, the day is over. Thank you for your presence at my side, for what went well and even for what taught me something. Forgive me my faults today, my harsh words, my forgetfulness, my thoughts that did not please you. I forgive those who hurt me. Watch over my home, those I love and all the people who work tonight. I lie down in peace, for you alone make me live in safety. Give me a quiet night and a rested heart for tomorrow. In Jesus' name, amen.

Psalm 4:8

I Lay My Worries Down Before Sleep

Father, I lay at your feet my worries of tonight. My mind is racing: tomorrow's tasks, my fears for those I love. I cannot solve anything now, so I hand them over to you one by one. You neither slumber nor sleep, you watch over me. Calm my mind and ease my body. If I wake in the night, help me turn my thoughts to you rather than to my worries. Give me restful sleep and a trusting heart. In Jesus' name, amen.

1 Peter 5:7

I Rest in You

Faithful God, thank you for this day you gave me and for the night that is coming. You are my shepherd and my protector. I do not have to control everything: without you, those who keep watch do so in vain. I thank you for my bed, my roof, the safety you give me. May my sleep be a sign of my trust in you. I place my spirit in your hands, as Jesus did. Tomorrow, wake me with your goodness and your faithfulness. I praise you now, and forever. Amen.

Psalm 127:2

When sleep will not come

Lord, it is late and I cannot sleep. I toss and turn in bed with my eyes open, and the time feels long. Rather than fight this sleeplessness, I choose to spend it with you. Through the watches of the night, I remember you and think of your faithfulness. You never slumber and never sleep: you watch over me. Relax my body, slow down my thoughts, and give me a rest that comes from you. If sleep is slow to come, let your presence be enough. I stay close to you, and I thank you for not leaving me. Amen.

Psalm 63:6

When my thoughts go around in circles

Father, as soon as I put my head on the pillow, the thoughts arrive: the bills, the conflicts, what I should have said, what could go wrong tomorrow. I cannot make them stop. So I do what your Word invites me to do: I present each of my worries to you with thanksgiving. I hand them over one by one. I cannot change any of it tonight, but you are watching. Guard my heart and my mind in Christ Jesus, and give me that peace which surpasses all understanding. Thank you for taking care of what I cannot carry. Amen.

Philippians 4:6-7

After an argument, before sleep

Lord, the day is ending with an argument, and the tension still weighs on my heart. I do not want to fall asleep with this anger. Show me my share of responsibility, even if I feel I was right. Forgive my harsh words and my pride. Give me the courage to take the first step, tonight if possible, or tomorrow with humility. Calm the person I hurt or who hurt me too. I ask you to heal what is damaged and to restore peace between us. I place this night and this relationship in your hands. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What prayer can I say in the evening before sleeping?

Thank God for the day, confess what has drawn you away from him, forgive those who have hurt you, then entrust to him those you love and your worries for tomorrow. Finish by handing him your night. Psalm 4:8 says that we can lie down and sleep in peace, because it is God who gives us safety.

What should I do when I cannot sleep?

Do not feel guilty. Pray quietly, meditate on a verse such as Psalm 63:7, which speaks of thinking of God in the watches of the night, or read Psalm 23. If the insomnia lasts, see a doctor: taking care of your body is also part of wisdom. God does not hold your lack of sleep against you.

Does praying in the evening protect against bad dreams?

The Bible does not promise a night without nightmares, but it invites us to entrust our night to God, who does not sleep (Psalm 121:3-4). Praying before bed calms the mind. Hand him your fears and those of your children. Avoid seeing prayer as a magic ritual: it is a relationship of trust with your Father.
