Prayer for the Sick

Three prayers to entrust a loved one or yourself to God in illness, and ask for his peace, strength and presence at every step.

Pick a category

Whether you are sick yourself or at the bedside of someone you love, you can speak to God with confidence. He knows suffering and invites us to bring him our fears. We pray for peace, strength and wisdom, without demanding a specific outcome: God remains free and good. You can read these prayers aloud at a sick person's bedside or pray them alone.

Prayers

For a Sick Loved One

Lord, I think of the one I love who is sick. You know their body, their pain and their worries better than anyone. Be near them today. Ease their suffering, give them rest, and surround them with caring people. Grant wisdom and patience to the doctors and caregivers. Strengthen those who are with them too, including me. I ask for your peace for their heart, and for the certainty that they are not alone. May your will be done with kindness. In Jesus' name, amen.

Psalm 147:3

When I Am the One Who Is Sick

Father, I am sick and I am afraid. I feel fragile, sometimes angry or discouraged. I tell you so plainly, because you invite me to tell you everything. I place my body, my treatment and my future in your hands. Give me strength for each day, patience in the waiting and peace when the news is hard. I ask you to heal me if it is your will; and whatever the road, walk with me step by step. May your grace be enough for me, as you have said. Keep my heart close to you. In Jesus' name, amen.

2 Corinthians 12:9

You Remain the Rock of My Heart

Faithful God, thank you for being my refuge in illness. Thank you for the care I have received, for the visits, the messages and the prayers of my brothers and sisters. Even if my body grows weaker, you remain the rock of my heart. I thank you for every day of relief, every smile, every little bit of strength regained. Help me keep my eyes on you rather than on my symptoms. May this trial not separate me from you, but bring me closer to you. I trust you, for your love for me never changes. Amen.

Psalm 73:26

For a sick child

Father, my child is sick and my heart is heavy. I wish I could take the fever, the pain and the fear away, and I cannot. So I come to you, because you love this child more than I do. Jesus, you took children in your arms and blessed them: hold mine in your arms tonight. Give my child rest, take away the fear, and give the doctors the wisdom they need. Give me patience, gentleness and strength to watch over my child without being overwhelmed by anxiety. I place my child in your hands, because this child belongs to you. Amen.

Matthew 19:14

Before surgery

Lord, in a few hours I will be in the hands of a medical team, and I admit that I am afraid. I control neither how the operation goes nor what comes after. But you are with me, in the waiting room as in the operating room. I pray for the surgeons, the nurses and the anesthesiologists: keep their minds clear and their hands steady. Calm my heart, Father, and remind me that I am never alone. Whatever happens, I want to keep trusting you, and I place this moment in your hands. I ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Isaiah 41:10

For a loved one who does not believe

Father, the person I love is sick, and they do not believe in you. I do not always know what to say to them, and I am afraid of pushing too hard. So I speak to you about them. You know them by name, you have counted their days, and you want them to know you. Give me simple words and sincere love, without pressure or reproach. Let my presence, my actions and my patience speak to them of your goodness. Touch their heart the way only you can, when and how you choose. I entrust them to you, with their illness and their questions. Thank you for never giving up on them. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Bible say about praying for the sick?

James 5:14-16 invites the sick to call the elders of the church to pray over them, and believers to pray for one another. The Bible shows a compassionate God who can heal, but it does not promise healing with every prayer. We pray in faith while leaving the outcome to God's wisdom.

Can we pray for a sick person who does not believe?

Yes. You can pray for anyone, believer or not, that they would receive relief, peace and courage. The Bible invites us to pray for all people (1 Timothy 2:1). Pray with respect, without imposing anything, and offer your presence or practical help. If the person wishes, you can pray with them.

What should I do when healing takes time?

Keep praying and keep getting treated: the two do not oppose each other. Paul asked God to remove a thorn and received this answer: “My grace is sufficient for you” (2 Corinthians 12:9). God is not absent when healing is delayed. Ask him for strength, surround yourself with your church and do not stay alone.
