Who is 神戸キリスト栄光教会?
神戸キリスト栄光教会 (Kobe Christ Glory Church) traces its roots to 1960, when American missionaries from the Open Bible organization began evangelistic work in the Nagata district of Kobe, converting a small former dance hall into a place of worship. First known as Oohashi Bible Church, the congregation took its current name in 1983. Badly damaged by the Great Hanshin Awaji earthquake in January 1995, the church served as a relief center for disaster victims for around a hundred days before rebuilding and moving, in 2000, to its present site in Nagata.
Affiliated with the Japan Open Bible union (日本オープンバイブル), the church has been led since 1977 by pastor Wataru Sugawara and his wife Ryoko, with Sugawara stepping into the role of advisory pastor within the pastoral team in January 2025. The congregation holds three Sunday services along with a children's service and a youth service, and runs several ministries reaching out to the neighborhood: a weekly Thursday evening meal program for children, sign language, Korean and English classes, and various worship and dance teams.
