Who is 東京キリストの教会 (Tokyo Church of Christ)?
Founded in 1951 as the Yoyogi Hachiman Church of Christ by American missionaries George and Irene Garganas, sent by the Cornell Avenue Church in Chicago, the congregation grew rapidly before declining sharply after the couple left in 1957. They returned in 1986, and in 1989, under pastors Frank and Erika Kim, the church took the name Tokyo Church of Christ as part of a nationwide expansion plan, with sister churches established in Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka and then Sapporo. In 1995 the building was rebuilt by the world renowned architect Fumihiko Maki, and the network later extended to Sendai in 2012 and Okinawa in 2015.
Located in Tomigaya, in Tokyo's Shibuya ward, the church is currently led by pastor Takemoto Yudai. The Sunday service, at 10:30 am, is held in Japanese with simultaneous translation into English, Korean and Chinese, offers activities for all ages from children to seniors, and is also livestreamed on YouTube.
