18 Baby Dedication Messages and Wishes for the Parents and the Child

7 min read

Introduction

A baby dedication is a simple and moving moment: parents stand before the church family and commit their child to God, and the congregation promises to support them. If you are invited, you may want to write a card or say a few words and not know where to start. This page offers 18 messages sorted by who is writing: friends and church members, the child, godparents and grandparents, and short greetings for a card or a text. Choose one, put the baby's name in place of the bracket, and add a detail only you know.

Messages for the Parents

Parents are tired and moved. Keep your message warm and encouraging, and promise your prayers instead of advice.

"Congratulations on the dedication of [baby's name]! Watching you present your child to God today was a gift to all of us. We are praying for you as you raise him in love, and we are here whenever you need a hand."

"Dear [name] and [name], what a joy to celebrate this day with you. Your little one is so loved. We thank God for the way you trust him with your family, and we pray for wisdom and rest for you both."

"Thank you for letting us share in this special moment. [Baby's name] is already surrounded by a church family that loves you. We are committed to praying for your family and for your child's growth in faith."

"Parenting is the most humbling and beautiful job there is. Today you chose to place your child in God's hands, and that is a good beginning. We celebrate you and promise to walk with you."

"Your child's dedication reminds us that every life is a gift from God. Thank you for the example you give of faith and gratitude. May the Lord give you patience and joy in the years ahead."

1 Samuel 1:27

"I prayed for this child, and Yahweh has given me my petition which I asked of him."

Hannah speaks these words when she brings Samuel to the temple, after years of praying for a child. She does not hold on to what she received, but gives thanks and entrusts him to God. The verse can be read aloud during a dedication, because it captures the gratitude and trust that parents express on that day. Read all of 1 Samuel 1.

Messages Addressed to the Child

These can be read aloud during the service or written in a keepsake book for the child to read when older. Speak to the baby as to the person he or she will become.

"Dear [baby's name], today your parents and your church family promise to love you and to pray for you. You are a gift, and we are glad you are here. May you come to know Jesus for yourself."

"Little one, you have come into a family that wants the best for you, and into a church that wants to walk beside you. We do not know what your life will look like, but we know that you are loved today."

"[Baby's name], on the day of your dedication, we wrote these lines so that you could read them later. Know that many people prayed for you before you could speak, and that God has always been near."

"To our youngest member: welcome. You may not understand today, but you are surrounded by people who care about you. We pray that you will grow in wisdom, kindness and faith."

Luke 2:52

"And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men."

This is the only verse that summarizes the childhood and youth of Jesus: he grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people. Parents often choose it as a wish for a child, because it describes balanced growth. It is a hope, not a guarantee, and it fits a note that will be kept in a baby book. Read all of Luke 2.

Messages from Godparents and Grandparents

Godparents and grandparents have a special place. Say what you promise to do, such as praying, being present and telling the child about Jesus.

"[Baby's name], I am so proud to be your godmother. I promise to pray for you, to listen to you and to show you the love of Jesus in my life. You will always have a place at my table."

"Dear [name] and [name], thank you for trusting me as your child's godfather. I take this responsibility seriously and gratefully. I promise to be present, to pray and to point him to Christ."

"To our grandchild: we waited for you, we prayed for you and now we hold you. We promise to tell you stories, to bake with you and to speak to you about God. We love you more than words can say."

"Dear [name], as your child's grandparent, I thank God for this baby and for you. I will always be available to help and to pray. What a joy to see a new generation dedicated to the Lord."

Psalm 127:3

"Behold, children are a heritage of Yahweh. The fruit of the womb is his reward."

The psalmist calls children a heritage from the Lord and the fruit of the womb a reward. It is a verse that grandparents and godparents love, because it puts the birth of a child in the right light: not as a possession, but as a gift to be received with gratitude and cared for with love. Read all of Psalm 127.

Short Baby Dedication Wishes for a Card or a Text

A short card is often the most treasured. One or two lines are enough, with the baby's name written in full.

"Congratulations on [baby's name]'s dedication! Praying for your whole family today."

"What a blessed day! God bless you and your precious little one."

"Rejoicing with you as you dedicate your child to the Lord."

"Thankful for your family and for this sweet baby. Blessings on your dedication day!"

"Thinking of you today. May God watch over [baby's name] all the days of his or her life."

Numbers 6:24-26

"‘Yahweh bless you, and keep you. Yahweh make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. Yahweh lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’"

This blessing is often spoken over children, since it asks for the Lord's protection, grace and peace. It can be read by the pastor at the end of a dedication, or copied in a card. It does not promise an easy life, but it places the child in the care of the God who keeps and blesses. Read all of Numbers 6.

How to Write Your Own Baby Dedication Message

Use the baby's name. A message with the child's name feels written for him or her, and it will be kept longer.

Remember that dedication is not baptism. Parents dedicate their child to God and promise to raise him in the faith. Do not suggest that the ceremony saves the child. Speak of thanks, trust and prayer.

Make a promise you can keep. If you write that you will pray for the family, do it. If you are a godparent, say what you will actually do.

Avoid advice. New parents receive plenty of it. A kind word and an offer of practical help, such as a meal or an hour of babysitting, are worth more.

Write for the future. A line addressed to the child, who will read it in ten or twenty years, can become a treasure.

Keep it warm and short. A card with three sincere lines is better than a page of general wishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a baby dedication?

It is a ceremony in many evangelical churches in which parents publicly thank God for their child and promise to raise him or her in the faith. The congregation also promises to support them. It is different from baptism, which a person chooses later.

What do you write in a baby dedication card?

Congratulate the parents, mention the baby's name, promise your prayers and add a short verse or blessing. Two to four sentences are enough, and a handwritten card is always appreciated.

What Bible verses are good for a baby dedication?

1 Samuel 1:27, Psalm 127:3, Luke 2:52 and Numbers 6:24-26 are common choices. They speak of gratitude for a child, of a child as a gift and of the Lord's blessing.
