Christian Baby Congratulations Messages in Japan: 17 Examples for Family, Friends and Church

6 min read

Introduction

The birth of a baby brings joy to relatives, friends and the church. In Japan, these congratulations are called shussan-iwai: people send a card or a gift soon after the birth. For a Christian it is also a chance to thank God for new life. This page gathers 17 congratulation messages: from family, from friends and colleagues, from brothers and sisters at church and the pastor, and short lines for LINE or a card. Many also think of the health and rest of the new mother. Adapt them to the relationship and add the person's name. Every situation is different: if you do not know the circumstances, start by calmly expressing your joy.

Messages from Family (Grandparents, Siblings, Relatives, Husband to Wife)

Family wishes express relief that mother and child are well and the wish to meet them. To the new mother, first add that she should rest well.

"[name], congratulations on the birth. I heard that mother and baby are doing well, and I am so relieved. Rest well. I can't wait to meet my grandchild. Thanks be to God."

"[name], congratulations on the baby! I'm finally an aunt. If you're staying at your parents' place, tell me everything I can do to help. I'm waiting for lovely photos."

"We offer you our sincere congratulations on the birth of your child. We thank God for this new life. When you are settled, please come and show us the baby."

"[name], thank you for giving me this healthy child. I thank God that we got through that hard time together. Now, the three of us will move forward slowly."

Psalm 127:3

"Behold, children are a heritage of Yahweh. The fruit of the womb is his reward."

The psalmist sings that children are a heritage from the Lord, a gift from God. It invites us to receive a newborn not as the fruit of our own strength, but as a gift received. Slip it discreetly into a congratulation card. Read all of Psalm 127.

Messages from Friends and Colleagues

To a friend, say your joy in warm words and do not ask for a reply. To a colleague, polite congratulations are enough, with a discreet wish for the child's growth.

"[name], congratulations on the birth! Knowing the baby has arrived makes me as happy as if it were my own. The first weeks will be hectic, so don't worry about replying. When things calm down, let me come and see the baby."

"I offer my sincere congratulations on the birth of your child. I pray for the health of mother and child. May your little one's growth bring your family much joy."

"[name], you're a dad now, congratulations! The new life will have its difficulties, but a child's smile will be your greatest strength. Look after your wife, and let her rest too."

"Congratulations on the birth. I'm far away and sorry I can't come right now. A small gift is on its way. May this baby's birth be a blessing for your family."

Messages from Church and the Pastor

Among brothers and sisters at church, express your gratitude to God for the new life and your prayer for mother, child and family. Offering a meal or a helping hand supports a family after the birth.

"[name], congratulations on the birth. The whole church is rejoicing that God has given a new life. We are praying for the health of mother and baby and for your family's journey."

"[name], congratulations on the baby! What a beautiful gift from God. Take care of yourself after the delivery. If we can help, for example with a meal, tell us without hesitation."

"[name], congratulations on the birth. We thank God that mother and baby are safe. When the baby has settled, let's prepare the blessing of little children together. May the Lord bless your family."

"A baby has been born at [name]'s house! Congratulations. It is a lovely gift God has given. We are all praying for you."

"[name] and [name], congratulations on the birth. We have long known how much you hoped for this, and we are moved. We thank God from our hearts that we can share his grace with the whole church."

Psalm 139:13-14

"For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well."

This psalm confesses that God formed each of us in our mother's womb. It reminds us that a life just born is a creature of God, irreplaceable. A verse that suits the church's congratulations. Read all of Psalm 139.

Short Lines for LINE or a Card

A line on LINE or a card stays in memory even if it is short. A new mother is often short on sleep: do not ask for a reply, and say she can call you if she needs anything.

"Congratulations on the birth! No need to reply. Rest well."

"I thank God for the birth of this baby. I am praying for the mother's health and for this new life."

"Thank you for showing me the baby's face. I'm happy to rejoice with you over this gift from God."

"If the night crying keeps you from sleeping, write to me without hesitation. I can at least listen."

1 Samuel 1:27

"I prayed for this child, and Yahweh has given me my petition which I asked of him."

Hannah expresses in this way her joy at receiving the child she had prayed for. It is the plain expression of a prayer answered. For a family or a church member who had been praying for a long time, this verse takes on a special meaning. Read all of 1 Samuel 1.

How to Write Your Own Baby Congratulations

Right after the delivery, the mother's rest comes first. Send your message quickly, but visit only after she is home. Plan on about a month, asking what suits her.

Every mother's and baby's situation is different. Premature birth, hospital stays, miscarriage or stillbirth: some have lived through these. If you don't know, don't assert "mother and baby are well": say simply "I am praying for you."

For a birth, Japanese tradition avoids words such as "flow," "fall," "vanish," "cut" or "die." If you hesitate, choose a short, simple sentence.

Do not ask whether it is a girl or a boy, or about the name, the weight or the way of delivery. Waiting until the family speaks of it shows respect.

Lighten the burden of the return gift. In Japan, people send back a gift called "uchi-iwai." Writing "please don't worry about a return gift" relieves the family.

Whether to post the baby's photos and name on social media is for the parents to decide. Do not press for photos, and do not share them without permission.

Think of those for whom a child was long in coming, or who still hope for one. Choose a short verse that imposes nothing, and stay in shared joy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put a Bible verse in a baby card?

For a Christian family or church friend, a short verse is welcome. For someone without faith, leave the verse out and just add a discreet prayer such as "may the baby's steps be kept safe."

What does the church do in place of omiyamairi (the Shinto shrine visit to present a newborn)?

Many churches hold a blessing of little children or a presentation of the child to God. The name and form vary: ask the pastor. There is no need to reject other customs.

When should I send a baby gift?

It is usually sent between one week and one month after the birth, preferably when the mother's health has settled. Send a message first, then ask the right time for a gift or a visit.
