Introduction
Being a dad is a calling that no one fully feels ready for, and the Bible speaks to fathers with honesty and tenderness. These 20 verses, quoted from the World English Bible, are grouped into five themes: leading with love and gentleness, being a father like the heavenly Father, integrity and example, passing on faith and a legacy, and the joy of being a dad. Use them for your own encouragement, to write a Father's Day card, or to read together at the table. Take one a day and let it shape your prayers.
Leading with Love and Gentleness
1. Ephesians 6:4
"You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord."
Paul speaks directly to dads: do not provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the Lord's discipline and instruction. Firm guidance and patient tenderness belong together. Before you correct, take a breath and ask what your child needs to learn. Discipline that comes from love builds trust rather than resentment. Read all of Ephesians 6.
2. Colossians 3:21
"Fathers, don’t provoke your children, so that they won’t be discouraged."
A short sentence with a big warning: do not provoke your children, so that they won't be discouraged. A child can lose heart when all he hears is criticism. Look for reasons to encourage your kids this week, name something they did well, and let your words build them up. Read all of Colossians 3.
3. 1 Thessalonians 2:11
"As you know, we exhorted, comforted, and implored every one of you, as a father does his own children,"
Paul describes how he treated the believers in Thessalonica as a father treats his children, exhorting, comforting and urging them on. These three actions make a good picture of fatherhood. A good dad challenges, consoles and encourages, depending on what the moment requires. Ask God for the wisdom to know which one your child needs today. Read all of 1 Thessalonians 2.
4. 1 Corinthians 16:13-14
"Watch! Stand firm in the faith! Be courageous! Be strong! Let all that you do be done in love."
Watch, stand firm, be courageous, be strong, and let everything be done in love. This is a charge for any man who leads a family. Strength without love becomes harshness, and love without strength can become weak. Ask God to give you both, so that your home is protected and warm. Read all of 1 Corinthians 16.
5. Proverbs 3:11-12
"My son, don’t despise Yahweh’s discipline, neither be weary of his correction; for whom Yahweh loves, he corrects, even as a father reproves the son in whom he delights."
The writer compares the Lord's correction to a father's correction of the son in whom he delights. Correction is part of love, not its opposite. If you are a father, let this shape the way you discipline: with delight in your child, not with anger. And when God corrects you, remember that you are loved as a son. Read all of Proverbs 3.
A Father Like the Heavenly Father
6. Psalm 103:13
"Like a father has compassion on his children, so Yahweh has compassion on those who fear him."
Like a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him. God borrows from human fatherhood to describe his own heart. Dads, you are a living illustration for your children of what God is like. Let them see compassion in the way you listen, forgive and comfort. Read all of Psalm 103.
7. Luke 15:20
"“He arose, and came to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him."
In Jesus' parable, the father sees his son while he is still far off, runs to him and embraces him. He does not wait for a speech or an apology. This is God's welcome, and a model for every dad: when your child comes home after a failure, run toward them with open arms. Read all of Luke 15.
8. Matthew 7:11
"If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!"
Jesus argues from the ordinary to the extraordinary: if imperfect fathers know how to give good gifts to their children, how much more will the Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him. Be encouraged in praying for your kids. Your love for them is real, and God's love is greater still. Read all of Matthew 7.
9. 2 Corinthians 6:18
"I will be to you a Father. You will be to me sons and daughters,’ says the Lord Almighty.”"
God says he will be a Father to us, and we will be his sons and daughters. If your own father was absent or hard, this promise is a place of healing. And if you are a dad, remember that you are first of all a child of the heavenly Father, who gives you what you need to love your own children well. Read all of 2 Corinthians 6.
Integrity and Example
10. Psalm 112:1-2
"Praise Yah! Blessed is the man who fears Yahweh, who delights greatly in his commandments. His offspring will be mighty in the land. The generation of the upright will be blessed."
Blessed is the man who fears the Lord and delights in his commandments, and his offspring will be mighty. A father's character leaves a mark on the next generation. This is not a formula for an easy life, but a reminder that your reverence for God, even when no one is watching, shapes your children's world. Read all of Psalm 112.
11. Proverbs 14:26
"In the fear of Yahweh is a secure fortress, and he will be a refuge for his children."
In the fear of the Lord there is a secure fortress, and he will be a refuge for his children. A dad who honors God becomes, in a sense, a shelter for his family. Your children find safety not in your perfection but in the faith that holds you steady and the God you point them to. Read all of Proverbs 14.
12. Micah 6:8
"He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does Yahweh require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?"
What does the Lord require? To act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with your God. Here is a short job description for any father. Your kids will learn fairness, kindness and humility less from your speeches than from watching how you act at work, at home, in traffic and when you admit a mistake. Read all of Micah 6.
13. Proverbs 3:5-6
"Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight."
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. Fatherhood brings decisions that no one prepares you for. When you feel unsure about your work, your schedule, discipline or the direction of the family, acknowledge God in all your ways, and he will make your paths straight. Read all of Proverbs 3.
Passing On Faith and a Legacy
14. Joshua 24:15
"If it seems evil to you to serve Yahweh, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve Yahweh.”"
Joshua tells Israel to choose whom they will serve, and then declares: as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. It is one of the most famous commitments in the Bible. A father cannot believe for his children, but he can set the direction of his home. Say it out loud with your family, then live it. Read all of Joshua 24.
15. Psalm 78:4
"We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of Yahweh, his strength, and his wondrous deeds that he has done."
We will not hide the praises of the Lord, his strength and his wonders from our children, but tell them to the next generation. Fathers have a God-given opportunity to be storytellers. Share how God has helped you, how he answered prayer, how he forgave you. Your testimony will mean more to your kids than you can guess. Read all of Psalm 78.
16. Genesis 18:19
"For I have known him, to the end that he may command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of Yahweh, to do righteousness and justice; to the end that Yahweh may bring on Abraham that which he has spoken of him.”"
God chose Abraham so that he would command his children and household after him to keep the way of the Lord. The call to lead spiritually at home is as old as Abraham. It begins with your own walk, and then it overflows to your family through prayer, Scripture and a life of doing what is right and just. Read all of Genesis 18.
17. Isaiah 38:19
"The living, the living, he shall praise you, as I do today. The father shall make known your truth to the children."
The father makes known to his children God's truth. King Hezekiah wrote this after being delivered from death, and he saw his gratitude as something to pass on. Tell your children the specific ways God has been faithful to you. Thanks shared at the dinner table becomes the foundation of their trust. Read all of Isaiah 38.
The Joy of Being a Dad
18. Proverbs 17:6
"Children’s children are the crown of old men; the glory of children are their parents."
Children's children are the crown of old men, and the glory of children are their parents. There is joy running in both directions here. Children can be proud of a father who lives with integrity, and a father can rejoice in a family that grows. Let your children see that you are glad to be their dad. Read all of Proverbs 17.
19. Proverbs 23:24
"The father of the righteous has great joy. Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him."
The father of the righteous has great joy, and whoever fathers a wise child delights in him. Few joys equal watching your children grow in wisdom and faith. If you are a dad, keep praying for it. If you are the child, remember that your good choices bless your father more than you think. Read all of Proverbs 23.
20. Malachi 4:6
"He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”"
The Old Testament closes with a promise that God will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to their fathers. God cares about restored relationships at home. If there is distance between you and your child, or your own father, ask God to begin that turning of hearts today. Read all of Malachi 4.
