20 Bible Verses for Mothers: Strength and Encouragement for Every Season

9 min read

Introduction

Being a mother is one of the most beautiful and demanding callings there is, and the Bible has a lot to say to women in that role. These 20 verses, quoted from the World English Bible, are grouped into five themes: strength and dignity, a mother's love and comfort, passing faith to your children, strength for tired days, and honoring mothers. Use them to encourage yourself, to write a Mother's Day card, or to read aloud with your family. Take one verse a day, and let it become a prayer.

Strength and Dignity

1. Proverbs 31:25

"Strength and dignity are her clothing. She laughs at the time to come."

This is a picture of a mother clothed in strength and dignity rather than in worry. She can laugh at the days ahead because she trusts the One who holds them. On hard days, ask God to dress you in that same quiet confidence, and remember that strength is often a gift you receive, not something you produce. Read all of Proverbs 31.

2. Proverbs 31:26

"She opens her mouth with wisdom. Kind instruction is on her tongue."

A wise mother does not only speak a lot; she speaks with wisdom and kindness. Her tongue carries instruction wrapped in gentleness. Whether you are correcting a child, answering a teenager or praying at bedtime, ask God to put gracious words in your mouth, because a kind word can stay in a child's heart for a lifetime. Read all of Proverbs 31.

3. Proverbs 31:30

"Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman who fears Yahweh, she shall be praised."

Charm fades and beauty passes, but a woman who fears the Lord is worth praising. This verse frees mothers from the pressure of looking perfect or doing everything right. What matters most is your reverence for God, the quiet faith your children see in you every single day. Read all of Proverbs 31.

4. Proverbs 31:31

"Give her of the fruit of her hands! Let her works praise her in the gates!"

Give her the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her. Many mothers work without being noticed: meals, laundry, prayers, sleepless nights. This verse asks us to notice. If you are writing a card this year, name something specific she has done, and thank her for it out loud. Read all of Proverbs 31.

A Mother's Love and Comfort

5. Isaiah 66:13

"As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you. You will be comforted in Jerusalem.”"

God compares his own comfort to a mother's comfort, which shows how deeply a mother's tenderness reflects his heart. If you are a mother, your hugs and your presence matter more than you think. If you need comfort yourself, let the Lord hold you the way a mother holds a child who is crying. Read all of Isaiah 66.

6. Isaiah 49:15

"“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yes, these may forget, yet I will not forget you!"

A nursing mother seldom forgets her child, yet God says he will never forget you, even if she did. It is one of the strongest pictures of divine love in Scripture. Use it to reassure a mother who feels unseen, and to remind every child that God's care is deeper than even the best human love. Read all of Isaiah 49.

7. Isaiah 40:11

"He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young."

The Lord is pictured as a shepherd who carries the lambs in his arms and gently leads the mothers with young. Mothers who feel stretched thin can find rest here. God does not drive you; he leads you gently and carries what you cannot. Let him set the pace for your day. Read all of Isaiah 40.

8. 1 Samuel 1:27

"I prayed for this child, and Yahweh has given me my petition which I asked of him."

Hannah had asked God for a child for a long time, and here she says her prayer was answered. Many mothers know the long wait before a baby is born or adopted. Let this verse turn your memory toward thanksgiving, and see every child in your home as an answer to prayer received with gratitude. Read all of 1 Samuel 1.

Passing Faith to Your Children

9. Deuteronomy 6:6-7

"These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up."

God tells parents to keep his words on their own hearts first, then to talk about them at home, on the road, at bedtime and at breakfast. Faith is passed on mostly in ordinary moments. You do not need a perfect lesson plan, only a heart that loves God and a willingness to speak of him naturally. Read all of Deuteronomy 6.

10. Proverbs 22:6

"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it."

Train up a child in the way he should go, and he will not depart from it when he is old. This is a principle of wisdom, not an iron guarantee, but it encourages every mother who prays, teaches and models faith. Keep sowing. God is the one who makes the seed grow in his time. Read all of Proverbs 22.

11. 2 Timothy 1:5

"having been reminded of the sincere faith that is in you, which lived first in your grandmother Lois, and your mother Eunice, and, I am persuaded, in you also."

Paul remembers Timothy's sincere faith, which lived first in his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice. Two women quietly shaped a future servant of Christ. If you wonder whether your daily faithfulness matters, here is your answer: it can echo for generations, long after you have forgotten the small things you did. Read all of 2 Timothy 1.

12. 2 Timothy 3:15

"From infancy, you have known the holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith, which is in Christ Jesus."

From infancy Timothy knew the Scriptures, which made him wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Early exposure to God's word is one of the best gifts a mother can give. Read a short passage together, pray aloud, tell Bible stories at bedtime, and trust that the Spirit will use them. Read all of 2 Timothy 3.

13. Luke 2:19

"But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart."

After the shepherds left, Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. She did not understand everything, yet she treasured it. Mothers also carry things quietly: worries, hopes, small moments. Treasure what God is doing in your child's life, and bring what you do not understand to him in prayer. Read all of Luke 2.

Strength for Tired Days

14. Galatians 6:9

"Let’s not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up."

Parenting can feel like constant giving with little visible result. Paul says not to grow weary in doing good, because there will be a harvest in due season if we do not give up. Write this verse where you will see it on an exhausting day. Your patient daily work is not wasted. Read all of Galatians 6.

15. Isaiah 40:31

"but those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint."

Those who wait for the Lord will renew their strength, mount up with wings like eagles, run without growing weary and walk without fainting. Notice the last promise: sometimes the miracle is simply being able to keep walking. When you are running on empty, wait on him in prayer, even for five quiet minutes. Read all of Isaiah 40.

16. Philippians 4:13

"I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me."

Paul wrote this from prison, not from a place of ease. The strength Christ gives is not for conquering the world but for facing whatever the day brings. When the schedule is full and you feel small, say it as a prayer: I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. Read all of Philippians 4.

17. 1 Peter 5:7

"casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you."

Cast all your worries on him, because he cares for you. A mother's mind is often full of concerns for her children: health, friends, school, the future. Name them one by one and hand them to God. He is not irritated by your list. He cares, and he invites you to put the weight down. Read all of 1 Peter 5.

Honoring Mothers

18. Exodus 20:12

"“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you."

The fifth commandment is the first with a promise attached. To honor your mother is to value her, listen to her and care for her, at any age. If your mother is still with you, call her or visit this week. If she is not, give thanks to God for what she gave you. Read all of Exodus 20.

19. Proverbs 23:25

"Let your father and your mother be glad! Let her who bore you rejoice!"

Let your father and mother be glad, and let her who bore you rejoice. This is a gentle appeal to live in a way that brings joy to our parents. A kind word, an honest conversation, a visit or a handwritten card can do more than an expensive gift on Mother's Day. Read all of Proverbs 23.

20. Proverbs 31:28

"Her children rise up and call her blessed. Her husband also praises her:"

Her children rise up and call her blessed, and her husband also praises her. The deepest reward for a mother is often hearing her family say thank you. Do not wait for a special date. Tell your mother, or the woman who raised you, how she has blessed you, and say it while she can hear it. Read all of Proverbs 31.
