Christian Testimony: 15 Short Examples to Share Your Faith

7 min read

Introduction

You have been asked to share what God has done in your life and you don't know where to start. Here are fifteen examples of short testimonies, written in the first person and sorted by journey: growing up in the faith, adult conversion, hardship, coming back after drifting away. These are imagined stories, to be taken as models of structure. Draw on them to write your own in your own words.

Christian testimony of someone raised in the faith

When you have grown up in church, you often think you have nothing special to tell. Yet it is a real story: that of a faith that becomes your own.

"I grew up in church, between Sunday school and holiday meals. For a long time, my faith was my parents' faith. At sixteen, I started reading the Bible on my own and asking my own questions. That is when I understood that Jesus didn't just want to be part of my family, but part of my life."

"My parents prayed with us every evening. As a teenager, I found it repetitive. Then one evening of doubt, I caught myself praying the same words. I realized that these habits had laid something solid in me. That night, I made that faith my own, in my own words."

"I can't say my life turned around on one particular day. I simply grew up with God, with ups and downs. What I remember is that He never let go of me, even when I drifted away in my thoughts. Today I serve on the welcome team, and I do it out of love, not out of habit."

"I was baptized at fourteen and I thought everything was settled. At twenty, I went through a dry season when praying was a struggle. A friend suggested I read a psalm every morning. Little by little, the relationship came back, more mature and less routine than before."

Example of an adult conversion testimony

Tell simply what has changed, without exaggerating. True details touch people more than a spectacular story.

"I had never set foot in a church. A coworker invited me to a Christmas meal organized by his community. I found simple, warm people there who listened to me. A few weeks later, I read the Gospels. One evening, in my kitchen, I finally said yes to Jesus."

"At thirty-five, I had a good situation but an emptiness that nothing could fill. A neighbor told me about her faith, without pushing. I ended up following her to a service. What I heard spoke to me directly. I decided to seek God seriously, and I have never regretted it."

"I called myself an atheist. When my mother fell ill, I caught myself praying, without knowing to whom. A Christian friend walked with me and gave me a Bible. As I read it, I understood that God had been waiting for me for a long time. I welcomed Him, and I no longer walked alone."

"I discovered faith through an Alpha course, partly out of curiosity. The discussions were open, and nobody imposed anything on me. After a few weeks, I understood that I wanted to follow Jesus. Since then, I have been baptized and I have found a church family."

Christian testimony after hardship

A testimony about hardship doesn't need a triumphant ending. It can simply say who God was while it hurt.

"When I lost my job, I felt ashamed and afraid. For months, I prayed without seeing any change. What held me up was the presence of brothers and sisters from church who simply called to see how I was. I didn't become strong, but I was never alone."

"The diagnosis came on a Tuesday. I cried, I shouted, I asked God questions with no answer. He didn't answer the way I hoped, but He stayed. My prayer became more honest. Even today, I don't understand everything, but I know He is with me."

"After my divorce, I thought my faith would no longer be of any use. A friend invited me to a home group. I found people who listened, without judging. Little by little, I regained a taste for prayer. I'm not healed of everything, but I feel on my feet again."

"I lost my father suddenly. For weeks, I couldn't read the Bible anymore. I just told God: I'm here. One evening, a verse read aloud at church reached me. I didn't get a magic answer, but a gentle peace that has stayed with me since."

Testimony of returning to God after drifting away

This kind of testimony reassures those who feel far away. Keep it simple, without loading yourself with reproaches or downplaying the distance.

"For ten years, I stayed away from church, caught up in work and my own choices. One day, a song I heard by chance brought me back to childhood prayers. I pushed open the door of a service. They welcomed me without questions. I understood that God had never left me."

"I had drifted away after a disappointment in my church. For years, I avoided God along with people. A friend wrote to me without pressure. I replied, then I came back. It wasn't easy, but I found a community ready to move forward with me."

"I stopped praying when my life got complicated. I thought God was angry with me. As I reread the story of the found son, I understood that the Father was waiting for me. I came home empty-handed, and I was welcomed."

Verses to prepare your testimony

These passages help you stay on course: telling what God has done, with humility.

Psalm 66:16

"Come and hear, all you who fear God. I will declare what he has done for my soul."

A verse that sums up the purpose of a testimony well: telling what God has done for you, not what you have accomplished. Read all of Psalm 66.

1 Peter 3:15

"But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts. Always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear,"

It encourages you to be ready to give an account of your hope, with gentleness and respect toward the one who is listening. Read all of 1 Peter 3.

Mark 5:19

"He didn’t allow him, but said to him, “Go to your house, to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how he had mercy on you."

Jesus Himself asks a man to tell his own people what the Lord has done for him. You can start with your family circle. Read all of Mark 5.

2 Corinthians 5:17

"Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new."

It suits conversion testimonies well: the new life shows in everyday life, not only in words. Read all of 2 Corinthians 5.

How to prepare and share your testimony

Before: write your story in three parts, your life before, your encounter with God, what has changed since. Aim for a minute or two out loud. Read it aloud so the words feel natural to you.

During the conversation: look at the person in front of you, speak as to a friend, without jargon. Tell what happened to you, without lecturing. Accept the silences, and let the other person ask their questions.

Stay truthful. Don't embellish, don't leave out the difficulties. An honest story, with its doubts, touches people more than a perfect one. Also avoid criticizing what the other person believes or has been through.

After: offer, without insisting, to continue the conversation or to lend them a Bible or a book. Pray for that person, and accept that God does His work at His own pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you write a Christian testimony?

Organize it in three parts: your life before knowing Jesus, your encounter with Him, and what has changed since. Write it the way you speak, with true details. One to two minutes out loud is enough.

How long should a testimony be?

Between one and three minutes out loud, which is about 150 to 400 words. For a personal conversation, thirty seconds may be enough. What matters is to stay clear and leave room for the other person.

What if I don't have a spectacular story?

Your story counts just as much. A faith that grows, a forgiveness, a peace regained are real testimonies. People often see themselves in them more easily than in an exceptional story.

Do I always have to talk about my past sins?

Not in detail. You can say you were lost or far from God without going into the facts. Keep the focus on what God has done, and don't burden your listeners with needless details.
