The Word Transforms Your Mind

Introduction

We're continuing the series Rooted in the Word. Last Sunday, you saw that Jesus is the bread of life: without fresh bread, it's impossible to share Christ. Today, another object helps you understand what the Word comes to do in you: a sponge. It has one characteristic, absorbing, and one function, giving back what it has absorbed. If you soak it in clean water, it will release clean water. If you soak it in dirty water, it will release dirty water. Your mind works exactly the same way, which is why Paul writes in Romans 12.2: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind." God wants to renew your mind so that your life, under pressure, releases the fragrance of Christ.

1. The Sponge: You Give Back What You Absorb

A sponge by itself is useless: its value comes from what it is soaked in.
Your mind absorbs news, opinions, lies, other people's words, everything you absorb will sooner or later come back out.
A Bible that is used, studied, underlined, and annotated is a sign of a transformed life.
If the sponge is dry, you can squeeze it all you want, nothing comes out, and your fine words stay empty words for the people around you.

2. The Word Cleanses and Renews

The only detergent able to clean your mind is the Word of God, because it is the truth.
The Holy Spirit uses this Word to do a perfect work in your life.
The more you soak in the Word, the more sensitive you become to God, and the healthier your relationships become.
It's not only about moving from the mindset of the world to the mindset of the Kingdom, but also about moving from a Kingdom lived as law to a Kingdom lived as grace.

3. Storms Reveal What Is Inside You

It's not when everything is going well that you see who you really are, but in the storm, the trial, the temptation.
Under pressure, you no longer have the strength to control yourself or to pretend: the sponge gets squeezed, and what's inside comes out.
If you have absorbed bitterness, offense, and injustice without being transformed, those are the things that will come out of your mouth.
If you are soaked in the Word, then pain releases hope, offense releases blessing, injustice releases the justice of God.

4. The Broken Jar: Carrying the Fragrance of Christ

Jesus said we would do greater things than he did: not in power, but in reach, the church touches regions and peoples that his earthly presence never reached.
At Pentecost, Peter preached and three thousand people were converted (Acts 2), Jesus himself never converted that many in a single day during his three years of public ministry.
To carry the fragrance of Christ, it's not enough to be a beautiful sealed bottle, the woman at Jesus's feet had to break her jar for the perfume to come out.
As long as your will stays your own and not God's, all you're doing is bustling about like a bartender: a lot of motion, no fragrance. God is looking for broken men and women.
