Introduction
You are starting a church, you are part of a church planting team, or you are supporting friends who are launching one. This page gathers prayers to say alone or together, sorted by the major needs of a beginning: the founders, the location, the first members, the neighborhood, the finances and perseverance. They speak to God frankly, without promising success. Take them and adapt them with your team's own vocabulary.
Prayer for the Founders and Team of a New Church
A church plant rests first on a few people. Praying for them means praying for their humility, their unity and their families.
"Lord, you are the one who builds your Church, not us. We want to begin this work in humility. Give the founders a servant's heart, clear convictions and gentleness toward one another. May nothing be done for our own glory."
"Father, you have placed in our hearts this vision of a new community. We do not know everything. Give us wisdom to discern, courage to move forward and humility to seek counsel. Keep our marriages and our families as we commit ourselves."
"Faithful God, we are a small team with very different personalities. Teach us to listen to one another, to forgive quickly and to share the tasks without jealousy. Make us a united team that prays before deciding."
"Lord, our strength is limited and our schedules are already full. Help us not to neglect our families, our work and our own life with you. May a church not be built on our exhaustion. Teach us to serve with joy."
Prayer for the Meeting Place and the First Members
A place and a few faces: that is often all a church has at its beginning. These prayers entrust both to God.
"Lord, you know where we should meet. We are looking for a simple, accessible room at a reasonable price. Open the door you want, close the ones that do not fit. May this place, whatever it is, become somewhere your presence is felt."
"Father, thank you for this place you have given us, even if it is small or temporary. Help us take care of it and welcome everyone there warmly. May the walls matter less than what happens inside: prayer, the Word and friendship."
"Lord, send us the first people you want to see here. It may be only three or four at the start, and that is fine. Help us welcome them as guests of honor, seeking to know them rather than to count them."
"God of grace, those who come will have wounds, questions and sometimes distrust of churches. Make us patient and genuine. May no one feel judged at the door, and may everyone find a place to grow at their own pace."
Prayer for the Neighborhood and the Church's Finances
A church exists for those around it, and it has concrete needs. These prayers hold the two together, with honesty.
"Lord, you loved this neighborhood before we did. Open our eyes to its needs, its faces, its families. Help us serve before we speak, listen before we propose. May the neighbors one day be able to say that this church did them good."
"Father, we pray for the residents around us, those who do not know we exist. Prepare hearts, open conversations, give us opportunities to help. May our witness be simple, honest and patient."
"Lord, we need resources to rent, equip and serve, and we tell you so plainly. We believe you provide, and we want to manage honestly what you entrust to us. Keep us from haste and from reckless debt."
"Father, teach us transparency in the accounts and generosity in giving. May every euro be managed with care and known to the team. If resources run short, show us what to adjust, and keep our trust in you."
Prayer for the Perseverance of a Church Just Beginning
Beginnings demand endurance. Say these prayers in the weeks of discouragement, or read them as a team at a prayer meeting.
"Lord, there will be Sundays when we are few, and weeks when we will want to stop everything. Hold us when discouragement comes. Remind us that you have called us and that you remain faithful even when we doubt."
"Father, protect this church from divisions, criticism and rivalries. If a wound appears, give us the courage to name it and to heal it. Keep us centered on Jesus, on his Word and on love for others."
"Patient God, we do not know how long the building will take. Give us the perseverance of small steps. May we remain faithful even without visible results, and may this church, in ten years, whatever its size, have been faithful to you."
Verses for Praying for a New Church
Pray with these verses as a team, reading them in turn before praying. They remind us whom the church belongs to and what marks it.
Psalm 127:1
"Unless Yahweh builds the house, they who build it labor in vain. Unless Yahweh watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain."
It reminds us that the builders' work is in vain without the Lord. It is the verse of beginnings: it puts the church plant back in the hands of the one who truly builds. Read all of Psalm 127.
Matthew 16:18
"I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it."
Jesus speaks of his Church and says he will build it. It relieves the founder: responsibility for the result rests not on him but on Christ. Read all of Matthew 16.
Acts 2:42
"They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer."
It describes the life of the first community, with teaching, fellowship, the meal and prayer. A good roadmap for the start of a church. Read all of Acts 2.
Acts 2:47
"praising God, and having favor with all the people. The Lord added to the assembly day by day those who were being saved."
It shows a church that praises God and grows under his hand. It encourages us to pray for the neighborhood and for those God will add, without forcing the numbers. Read all of Acts 2.
How to Pray as a Team for a Church Plant
Set a regular time, even a short one, preferably weekly. A team prayer that returns every week holds up better than one big occasional evening.
Pray specifically: a name, a need, a place, an amount. When God answers, you recognize it, and your team has reasons to thank him. Write down the answers in a shared notebook.
Also pray for those who are not here yet: future members, neighbors, the other churches in the city. A church plant is lived in good understanding with others, not in competition.
Pray for yourself and for your marriage. A church needs rested leaders. Do not wait until you are exhausted to ask a more experienced pastor for help.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you pray for a new church?
Start by entrusting to God the founders, the place, the first members and the neighborhood, one point at a time. Pray as a team every week, with specific requests, and give thanks when you see an answer.
Can you ask God to make a church grow?
Yes, while keeping the right heart: he makes it grow, and we serve faithfully. Ask him for people to love rather than numbers, and accept that he may give you growth that is slow or different from what you imagined.
What should I pray when the church is short of money?
Pray frankly, without shame in naming the need. Ask God to provide, but also for wisdom to manage, transparency in the accounts and patience. A shortage can also be an invitation to simplify.
How can I support a friends' church plant through prayer?
Ask the team for specific prayer topics and occasionally send them a short message to say that you are praying. Pray for the founders and their families, and if you can, make yourself available for concrete help.
to take notes and ask questions.
