In brief
Ahimelech, son of Ahitub, is a priest at Nob, the city of priests, when David flees from Saul. When David arrives alone and hungry, Ahimelech gives him the holy bread and Goliath's sword, and inquires of Yahweh for him. Denounced by Doeg the Edomite, he defends David's loyalty before Saul, who has him killed with eighty-five priests. Only his son Abiathar escapes. Jesus later recalls the episode of the bread. He is remembered for his kindness to David and the price he paid.
What does the name Ahimelech Priest of Nob mean?
His name is generally understood to mean my brother is king, but the Bible does not explain it. He should not be confused with Ahimelech the Hittite, David's companion (1 Samuel 26:6), nor with Ahimelech son of Abiathar, a priest under David (2 Samuel 8:17).
The story of Ahimelech Priest of Nob
David arrives alone at Nob
1 Samuel 21:1-3Fleeing Saul, David goes to Nob, to the priest Ahimelech. Trembling, Ahimelech comes to meet him and asks why he is alone. David claims to be on a secret mission for the king and says he has arranged to meet his men. He asks for five loaves, or whatever is at the priest's hand.
The holy bread
1 Samuel 21:4-7Ahimelech has no ordinary bread, only holy bread. He gives it on condition that David's men have kept themselves from women, and David assures him they are clean. The priest then hands over the showbread, which had just been taken from before Yahweh to be replaced by hot bread. Doeg the Edomite, chief of Saul's herdsmen, is there that day.
Goliath's sword
1 Samuel 21:8-10David asks for a spear or a sword, as he left without weapons. Ahimelech has only the sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom David killed in the valley of Elah. It is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. David answers: “There is none like that. Give it to me.” Then he flees to Achish, king of Gath.
Denounced before Saul
1 Samuel 22:9-15Saul accuses his servants of conspiring against him. Doeg reports that Ahimelech inquired of Yahweh for David and gave him food and the sword of Goliath. Saul summons Ahimelech and his whole father's house. The priest defends David, the most faithful of the king's servants, and says he knows nothing of the matter, small or great.
The massacre at Nob
1 Samuel 22:16-19Saul sentences Ahimelech and his whole father's house to death. His guards refuse to raise a hand against the priests of Yahweh. Doeg the Edomite obeys and kills eighty-five men who wear the linen ephod that day. Saul also strikes Nob, the city of the priests: men, women, children, infants and livestock.
Abiathar escapes
1 Samuel 22:20-23A son of Ahimelech, Abiathar, escapes and flees to David. David admits that he is responsible for the death of everyone in Abiathar's father's house. He keeps Abiathar with him and promises him protection, for whoever seeks the life of the one seeks the life of the other.

Frequently asked questions
Why did Ahimelech give David the holy bread?
The text says he had no ordinary bread at hand, only the showbread taken from before Yahweh (1 Samuel 21:4-6). David and his men were in need. Ahimelech made sure they were clean, then gave it to him. Jesus cites this episode to show that the Sabbath was made for man (Mark 2:25-27).
Why did Saul have Ahimelech killed?
Doeg the Edomite reports that the priest inquired of Yahweh for David and gave him food and Goliath's sword. Saul sees this as a conspiracy. Ahimelech defends David and says he knows nothing, but Saul condemns him with his whole father's house. Doeg kills eighty-five priests that day (1 Samuel 22:9-18).
Where is the story of Ahimelech in the Bible?
It is found in the first book of Samuel, chapter 21, verses 1 to 9, for David's visit to Nob, and chapter 22, verses 9 to 23, for the massacre of the priests. The title of Psalm 52 recalls this episode, and Jesus mentions the showbread in Matthew 12:3-4 and Mark 2:25-26.
