In brief
Hosea is a prophet of the kingdom of Israel in the eighth century BC, son of Beeri. God commands him to marry Gomer, so that his life would illustrate the unfaithfulness of Israel and the faithfulness of the Lord. His children bear symbolic names. When Gomer falls again, God asks him to love her still and to buy her back. The book reveals a God whose heart is moved for his people.
What does the name Hosea mean?
The name Hosea is generally linked to the Hebrew Hoshea, which evokes "salvation" or "he has saved", of the same family as Joshua. The Bible gives no explanation of this name, so this meaning remains tentative.
The story of Hosea
A difficult calling
Hosea 1:1-3The word of the Lord comes to Hosea, son of Beeri, in the time of several kings of Judah and of Jeroboam in Israel. God tells him to take a wife of prostitution and children of prostitution, because the land is abandoning the Lord. Hosea takes Gomer, daughter of Diblaim.
Three children, three names
Hosea 1:4-9Gomer bears a son, called Jezreel, then a daughter, Lo-Ruhamah, "not shown mercy", and another son, Lo-Ammi, "not my people". These names announce the judgment coming on the house of Israel, but God also promises to have mercy on the house of Judah.
The lawsuit and the promise
Hosea 2Chapter 2 presents God's charge against a people who run after other lovers, the Baals. But it does not stop at judgment: the Lord announces that he himself will bring his people back to him, and that disaster will be followed by restoration.
Loving again and buying back
Hosea 3:1-5God tells Hosea to love an adulterous woman again, as the Lord loves the children of Israel who turn to other gods. Hosea buys her for fifteen shekels of silver and some barley, and asks her to remain faithful to him. Israel will one day return to seek the Lord.
The heart of God
Hosea 11:1-9God recalls that he loved Israel from its youth and called it out of Egypt. He led it with cords of human kindness, but the people drifted away. Yet his heart is stirred and his compassion grows warm. He refuses to destroy Ephraim, for he is God and not a man.
What Hosea teaches us
- God's love is faithful, even when his people turn away from him.
- God paid the price to redeem those who had wandered, as Hosea redeemed Gomer.
- Idolatry means putting our trust in something other than the Lord, and it always breaks the relationship.
- God's judgment is not the last word: it is followed by a promise of restoration.
- A servant of God may be called to live out in his own flesh what the message proclaims.
Key verses
God says to Hosea: “Go again, love a woman loved by another, and an adulteress, even as Yahweh loves the children of Israel”. Hosea's act becomes a living picture of the perseverance of God's love.
“When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.” This verse recalls God's first love. The gospel of Matthew applies it to Jesus, called out of Egypt.
God says he drew his people “with cords of a man, with ties of love”. The image is that of a father who guides gently, not a master who compels, and it sheds light on God's whole relationship with Israel.
“I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One among you; and I will not come in wrath.” God's holiness is shown here in his compassion and his decision not to destroy his people.
