Tychicus in the Bible

Story, name meaning and life lessons

In brief

Tychicus is a Christian from Asia and a companion of Paul. He is part of the group that accompanies the apostle on his journey toward Jerusalem. Paul calls him the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord. He sends him to the Ephesians and Colossians to bring news and comfort their hearts, and plans to send him to Titus in Crete. He is an example of a discreet, reliable and available servant.

What does the name Tychicus mean?

Tychicus is a Greek name, generally linked to a word suggesting chance or fortune. The Bible does not explain it; it describes him instead by his character as a beloved brother and faithful servant (Ephesians 6:21).

The story of Tychicus

  1. Paul's traveling companion

    Acts 20:1-6

After the uproar at Ephesus, Paul travels through Macedonia and Greece. Several brothers accompany him as far as Asia, including Sopater, Aristarchus, Secundus, Gaius, Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus, who are from Asia. They go ahead and wait for Paul and his companions at Troas.

  2. Sent to the Ephesians

    Ephesians 6:21-22

At the end of his letter to the Ephesians, Paul says that Tychicus, “the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord,” will make known to them all his affairs. He sends him for this very purpose, that they may know the apostle's state and that he may comfort their hearts. It is generally understood that Tychicus carried this letter himself.

  3. Sent to Colossae with Onesimus

    Colossians 4:7-9

Paul also calls Tychicus his fellow bondservant in the Lord. He sends him to the Colossians for the same purpose: to bring news and comfort their hearts. Tychicus makes the journey with Onesimus, the faithful and beloved brother who is one of them. Together they will tell the church everything that is going on with Paul.

  4. Sent to Ephesus

    2 Timothy 4:9-12

In his last letter, Paul asks Timothy to come to him soon. Demas has deserted him, Crescens and Titus have gone, and only Luke is with him. Amid this news, Paul writes simply: “I sent Tychicus to Ephesus.” The faithful co-worker is once again on a mission.

  5. A replacement for Titus

    Titus 3:12

Writing to Titus, Paul asks him to come to him at Nicopolis, where he has decided to winter, as soon as he sends Artemas or Tychicus. Paul therefore counts on Tychicus as a man who can be sent to Titus, to whom he had entrusted the church in Crete.

What Tychicus teaches us

  • Faithfulness in unseen tasks counts as much as visible ministries.
  • Bringing news and comforting hearts is a real service in the Lord.
  • A reliable servant can be sent wherever the church needs him.
  • The work of God advances through teams, not through one man alone.
