Three prayers to entrust illness, weariness or anxiety to God, for yourself or a loved one, asking for his peace and strength without replacing medical care.

Pick a category

This page is for you if you are sick, worn out, or carrying the illness of someone you love. To pray is to lay before God what weighs on you and ask for his peace, his strength and his wisdom. Prayer goes alongside medical care, it does not replace it. God remains free in his answer, and we entrust ourselves to him.

Prayers

I Entrust My Health to You

Lord, I am sick and I am tired. You know my body better than I do. I lay before you my pain, my tests, my questions and my fears, because you care for me. Give me patience to get through these days, wisdom to follow the advice of my doctors, and the peace that the world cannot give. I ask you to relieve me and to heal me, if it is your will. Whatever happens, stay close to me. I am not alone, you are with me. In Jesus' name, amen.

1 Peter 5:7

For a Sick Loved One

Father, I pray for someone I love who is sick. You know them by name, you see their suffering. I entrust them to you completely. Touch them as you choose, ease their pain, strengthen their body and their courage. Give the caregivers skill and gentleness. Give us, their family and me, your peace that surpasses all understanding, and guard our hearts from panic. Help me to be present, to listen, to serve without growing weary. I do not know what tomorrow will bring, but I know you hold their future in your hands. In Jesus' name, amen.

Philippians 4:6-7

Thank You for Your Faithfulness in Weakness

Lord, I want to thank you for every day of strength, for every treatment received, for every person who supported me. Even in weakness, you carried me. I do not forget your benefits. If I am restored, may my gratitude never fade. If the illness lasts, may my trust in you not weaken, for your grace is sufficient for me. You are the God who lifts up, who comforts and who keeps. I place my body in your hands and I trust you for what comes next. May my life, in health or not, bring you glory. Amen.

Psalm 103:2-3

A prayer before surgery

Father, in a few days I will enter the operating room. I am afraid of the unknown, and I come to tell you so without hiding it. I am not asking you to control everything in my place, but to stay close to me. Guide the hands and the attention of the caregivers who will look after me. Quiet my thoughts, give me peaceful sleep the night before, and make my heart calm when the moment comes. Watch over the people who love me and wait anxiously. Whatever happens, I want to remember that you are with me, in the light as in the dark moments. I place my body, my recovery and my future in your hands. In the name of Jesus, amen.

Psalm 23:4

A prayer for a sick child

Lord, my child is sick, and my parent's heart is heavy. I wish I could take their place and bear their suffering for them, but I cannot. So I come to you, because you love them more than I ever could. Touch their body, ease their pain, give them rest and peace. Make me patient and gentle through these short nights and long days of waiting. Give wisdom to the doctors and nurses who care for them. Support those around me too, who sometimes tire me without meaning to. Father, I do not want to let fear rule me. I entrust my child to your faithful hands and ask you not to let go of us. In the name of Jesus, amen.

Isaiah 41:10

A prayer for a sick loved one who does not believe

Father, someone I love is seriously ill, and they do not share my faith. I so wish they knew you, but I know I cannot force them. Help me to surround them gently, without pressure or heavy speeches. Give me simple gestures, a sincere presence and the right words when they are ready to hear them. Ease their pain, protect them from fear and from the feeling of being alone. Lord, you know what they are living deep inside. Touch their heart in your own way and at the time you choose. I place their health and their salvation in your hands, because you love them more than I do. Strengthen me too, so that I can stand firm by their side. In the name of Jesus, amen.

Bible verses to meditate on

Frequently asked questions

Can you pray for healing while seeing a doctor?

Yes. The Bible does not set them against each other: Paul recommends a little wine to Timothy for his stomach (1 Timothy 5:23) and Luke was a physician (Colossians 4:14). Praying and receiving care go together. Doctors are a means God can use, and prayer entrusts everything to his wisdom.

Does God always heal when we pray?

The Bible shows that God can heal, but it does not promise healing with every prayer. Paul asked for the thorn to be removed, and God answered that his grace was sufficient for him (2 Corinthians 12:9). We ask in faith, and we entrust ourselves to him whatever his answer.

What does the Bible say about praying for the sick?

James 5:14-15 invites the sick person to call the elders of the church to pray over them in the name of the Lord. Prayer is an act of faith and of fellowship. It is offered in humility, asking God for his will, his peace and his presence in the trial.
