Psalms: the Bible's book of prayer
A collection of 150 prayers and songs, the Psalms cover the whole human experience before God: praise and distress, trust and doubt, joy and tears. David composed about half; others are signed by Asaph, the sons of Korah or Moses. It was Israel's prayer book — and the prayer book of Jesus, who quotes it more than any other book.
Here are some of the most loved texts in all the Bible: "The Lord is my shepherd" (Psalm 23), "God is our refuge" (Psalm 46), the cry of Psalm 51 after sin, the final praise of Psalm 150. Praying with the Psalms means borrowing proven words for what you are living.

Frequently asked questions about Psalms
Who wrote the Psalms?
Several authors over several centuries: David (73 psalms bear his name), Asaph, the sons of Korah, Solomon, Moses (Psalm 90) and anonymous writers. The final collection was gathered after the exile.
What is the most famous psalm?
Psalm 23, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want," read in times of grief as well as confidence. Then come Psalm 91 (protection), Psalm 51 (forgiveness) and Psalm 139 (God knows me).
How do I pray with the Psalms?
Read them slowly and make their words your own: one psalm a day, or one chosen for what you are going through — distress (Psalm 42), gratitude (Psalm 103), trust (Psalm 27). The Psalms authorize every emotion before God.
