The Blessing of Obedience, the Key to Heaven

Introduction

You may have already heard dozens of sermons on the Word of God, on faith, on blessing. But here is one question that stings: do you actually put it into practice, or do you just listen to it? Because today, it is no longer about owning something, but about using it. And this key, the one that opens the floodgates of heaven over your life, has a name: obedience.

Today, a third symbol: the key. A key, you can carry it in your pocket, you can look at it, you can even admire it, it will not open a single door until you put it into the lock and turn it. Owning it is not enough. You have to use it. And this key, today, is obedience.

2. James 1:22: do not be a hearer only

The verse that opens the message is James 1:22: "Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." Words are not enough. Listening is not enough. You have to be "doers," people who put it into practice.

That Sunday, at Rehoboth, there were baptisms. People who were no longer just hearers, but doers. They had heard what the Word says, and they had decided to obey. Baptism is exactly that: a concrete act of obedience. Moving from listening to action.

3. Obedience as an act of faith

First point: obedience is the authentic proof of faith. The classic example is Abraham. One day God tells him: "Take everything, leave your country, and go." Without telling him exactly where he was to go. Look at what Hebrews 11:8 says: "By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going."

Obedience is not born from what you see, it is born from trusting God before you understand everything. We often wait for explanations, for confirmations, we want to be sure before we move. And worse still, we only move when circumstances turn bad, when everything is collapsing around us. But God, for his part, often gives you the signals before that. You have to learn to move when he speaks, not when the crisis pushes you from behind.

Ask yourself: where is God asking you today to trust him, without your having the answers yet? To believe is to obey. To obey is to believe. The two are directly linked.

4. Obedience as an act of love

Second point: obedience is not first a duty, it is a response of love. Before leaving this world, Jesus said, in John 14:15: "If you love me, you will keep my commandments." Obedience is directly connected to love.

Hold on to this other sentence: obedience is not a duty, it is a response to the love of God. We too often believe we have to obey because we must. But we obey God because we love him, and above all because he loved us first.

You have probably experienced this: obeying someone you do not love is heavy. Obeying a boss you dislike, someone who gets on your nerves, every order weighs a ton. But obeying someone you deeply love becomes light, simple, almost natural. This is exactly what Jesus describes when he says we must become like little children to enter the kingdom of heaven. A child does not ask a thousand questions. When his father says "let's go," he comes, he follows, because he knows: my father loves me, he is taking me where it is good for me.

When your heart is transformed, when your mind is renewed, obedience becomes an act of love. You no longer obey in order to be loved, you obey because you are already loved. To love is to obey. To obey is to love.

5. Obedience as access to blessings

Third point, and the heart of the message: obedience is the key that opens access to blessings. In Deuteronomy 28:1-14, God lays out an impressive list of blessings that follow obedience to his voice.

Hold on to this clarification: blessing does not follow talent, it follows obedience. We often believe that if we are gifted, if we are brilliant, then we will be blessed. That is not how the kingdom of God works. Blessing does not follow talent, it follows obedience.

Watch out for a very common misunderstanding: God does not bless your plans. God blesses his plans, the ones he gave you to carry out. We often confuse the two. We launch a project, and then we ask God to bless it. But sometimes we have launched the wrong thing. God, for his part, will always honor what he himself commanded you to do. He honors obedience in your life.

Blessing is obedience. Obedience is blessing.

6. Building on the rock: one brick at a time

In Matthew 7:24, Jesus says: "Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock." It does not matter where you are in your walk with God, whether you have just started, whether you have been walking for twenty years or even longer. What matters is that every day you add one small brick, one mattoncino, by obeying what you have understood so far.

The baptism, that day, was exactly that. People saying, "I no longer want to live my own way, I want to live what Jesus has planned for my life." That is the beginning of the blessing God wants to pour out on them.

7. The key that opens the floodgates of heaven

The preacher returns to a word mentioned the previous Sunday: the catarate, the floodgates, the sluices of heaven. The Hebrew term evokes a window being opened, but in a much broader sense, today we would rather say that a dam is giving way. And God can make that dam give way over your life. Not with water, with blessings. The key that opens these floodgates is obedience.

The call today is simple: open your heart. Symbolically step into the waters of baptism and let Jesus pour these blessings over your life. He is ready and waiting for you. Today, you can choose to welcome Jesus Christ into your life.
