The Power of Accountability for Growing in Christ

Introduction

Ben Peterschmitt continues the "Woven Together" series at CVV Paris church with the fifth and final practice of life in community: accountability. After choosing to prioritize one another, developing affinity, learning to be vulnerable, and welcoming one another with empathy, what remains is letting others speak into our lives. Accountability is not surveillance: it is the channel through which the Holy Spirit helps you fight hidden sin, live courageously for Jesus, and discern his call on your life.

God created you in his image (Genesis 1:26-27) to reflect his creativity, his justice, his goodness.

Ben tells how, together with Clément, Sam, and Léa Jequier, they went out on Saturday mornings to Place de la République and Place de la Nation to talk about Jesus and pray for the sick.
They experienced refusals, endless debates, awkwardness, but also breakthroughs, like the man who gave his life to Jesus right there in the public square with Léa.
It was being together that pushed them beyond themselves: look around you for people who have made concrete decisions to follow Christ, and draw close to them.

4. Accountability to discern God's call

Many Christians make their big decisions in silos (alone or as a couple), without ever submitting their conviction to others who share the same Spirit.
"Plans fail for lack of counsel" (Proverbs 15:22).
"The spirits of prophets are subject to prophets" (1 Corinthians 14:32) and "let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said" (1 Corinthians 14:29).
Ben shares about a major recent decision where friends were able to hear the words received from a couple, weigh them, and together confirm the community's peace, that is what it means to discern God's call together.

No. Accountability is only established after four other practices: priority, affinity, vulnerability, and empathy. Without trust built over time, accountability becomes intrusive. With that trust, it becomes a channel of healing, courage, and discernment, not a mechanism of mutual surveillance.

Why confess my sins to a brother when God already forgives me?

James 5:16 explicitly links mutual confession to healing: "Confess your sins to one another... that you may be healed."
