Introduction
Exams put pressure on both those taking them and those who love them. Here are fifteen prayers to say for yourself, your child or a student you know, from the start of revision through the results, good or bad. They do not promise success: they trust to God the work, the fear and what comes next. Pick the one that matches where you are.
Prayer Before Revision and on Test Day
These prayers are for the person taking the exam. Say them before you sit at your desk, the evening before or just before entering the room.
"Lord, the pile of notes looks huge to me. I ask you for a method and discipline to begin. Help me to work hard, to sleep enough and not to compare myself to others."
"Father, when my mind wanders and I waste time, gently bring me back to my notebooks. You know I am afraid I will not remember anything. I trust my memory and my tiredness to you."
"God of peace, it is the day before the exam and my thoughts go round and round. I place before you what I did not have time to review. Give me a real night of rest."
"Lord, this morning I sit down before the exam. Let your peace keep my head clear. Help me to read each question carefully, to remember what I learned and to stay honest until the end."
"Jesus, whatever happens today, my worth does not rest on a mark. Thank you for reminding me of that. Give me the calm to do my best and the thankfulness for the chance to study."
Prayer for Your Child or a Student Taking an Exam
When it is someone else taking the exam, you cannot do anything in their place. Praying is a way to stay present without adding pressure.
"Lord, my child is taking his exam this week and I see his fear. I trust him to you. Help him to remember what he knows, and help me not to add my pressure to his."
"Father, thank you for my daughter and for her work this year. You know her efforts. Let her enter the room without panic, and let her know that my love will not change, no matter what her mark is."
"Lord, I pray for my son, a student away from home. Short nights and being alone are wearing him down. Surround him with solid friends, keep his faith alive and give him strength to hold on until the last exam."
"Faithful God, I place before you the young people in our church taking their exams. Some are very stressed, others unconcerned. Touch each one where they are. Let them know that you are with them in the exam room."
"Lord, my nephew doubts his abilities and thinks he will fail. Give him confidence, with good humility. Put someone on his path who encourages him and helps him study calmly."
Prayer While Waiting for Results and After Failure
Waiting for results is often harder than the exam itself. Here are words for those days, for both success and disappointment.
"Lord, the results come in three days and the waiting eats at me. I cannot change anything now. Teach me to live these hours in your peace, to eat, to sleep and not to imagine the worst."
"Father, as I wait for the list of those accepted, I already thank you for all I learned this year, whatever the answer is. Help me to welcome the response with calm, whether it brings me joy or hurts me."
"Lord, I failed and I am ashamed to say it. People's looks weigh on me. Comfort me, you who do not despise a broken heart. Show me the next step, without rushing me."
"God who knows us, my son failed his exam and thinks he is worthless. Help me to find the right words and to listen before I give advice. Remind him, and remind me, that your love is not measured by diplomas."
"Father, thank you: I passed. I know I would not have made it alone, or without those who supported me. Keep me from pride and think of friends who did not have this joy. Let me use this diploma to serve."
Bible Verses for Exams
Copy a verse onto a card and put it near your notes. These passages speak of wisdom, trust and peace, without promising anything about the mark.
James 1:5
"But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him."
A verse for asking God for the wisdom you lack, not just for answers. It fits very well before you start revising. Read all of James 1.
Proverbs 3:5-6
"Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight."
To help you not lean only on your memory or your intelligence, but also on the one who guides your steps. Read all of Proverbs 3.
Philippians 4:6-7
"In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus."
The verse about handing your worries to God. Many students read it again the night before an exam to find their calm. Read all of Philippians 4.
Joshua 1:9
"Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go."
An encouragement as you walk into the exam room: you are not going in alone, even if no one can help you with your paper. Read all of Joshua 1.
How to Pray During a Period of Exams
Keep prayer times short and regular rather than one long frantic prayer. Five minutes in the morning is better than an hour the night before.
Tell God your fear of failure without hiding it. He already knows what you feel, and naming it brings relief.
Do not ask only for success: ask for clarity, concentration and the strength to finish well what you have started.
Pray also for what comes next, whatever it is. If you accept ahead of time that God might lead you somewhere other than where you planned, failure hurts less.

Frequently Asked Questions
What prayer should I say before an exam?
A short prayer is enough: tell God your fear, ask him for peace, memory and honesty, then trust him with the result. You can say it the evening before and repeat it in one sentence before you enter the room. Prayer does not take the place of study.
Can God help me pass my exam?
God helps you keep your calm, work with order and remember what you learned. He does not promise success, and you must not use him as a shortcut. He walks with you in the result, good or hard, and does not leave you alone.
How do I pray for my child taking an exam?
Trust him to God with his work and his fear, ask God for peace for him and for you. Avoid promising him success through prayer. Tell him instead that you are praying and that your love does not rest on his marks. That will help him more than long advice.
What do I say to God after failing an exam?
Tell him plainly your disappointment, your shame and your questions. The Psalms show that you can be honest with him. Then ask to see the next step without rushing. Failure hurts, but it is not the end of your story or the worth God gives you.
