Evangelical churches in Tokyo

In Tokyo, evangelical Christians remain a small minority within a population that is mostly non religious, Buddhist or Shinto, but the city's Protestant landscape is more varied than it first appears. It includes churches rooted in historic American missions, such as the congregation founded in Yoyogi Hachiman in 1951 within the Churches of Christ movement (International Churches of Christ), congregations connected to Korean Pentecostalism through the Full Gospel Japan Association, a church affiliated with the Australian Christian Churches serving the international community, and several independent churches (tanritsu) that grew out of small home groups or that belong to Japanese evangelical networks such as the JEC. Many of these communities meet in office buildings, rented hotel rooms or modest dedicated buildings rather than large cathedrals.
