20 Bible Verses for a New Home: Blessings for Your Housewarming

9 min read

Introduction

Moving into a new home is a fresh start, and it is a good moment to place it in God's hands. These 20 verses, quoted from the World English Bible, are grouped into five themes: building your home on the Lord, blessing and protection for your house, peace within your walls, an open door for others, and gratitude for your new home. Use them to pray through each room, to write a housewarming card, or to hang one on the wall. Read a verse at your first meal in the house and make it a tradition.

Building Your Home on the Lord

1. Psalm 127:1

"Unless Yahweh builds the house, they who build it labor in vain. Unless Yahweh watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain."

Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. This is the foundation of a Christian home: God is invited in first, not last. As you unpack, pause and say aloud that this home belongs to him. Ask him to be the builder of your family's life inside these walls. Read all of Psalm 127.

2. Proverbs 24:3-4

"Through wisdom a house is built; by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all rare and beautiful treasure."

A house is built through wisdom, established by understanding, and filled with treasure through knowledge. The best furniture is not what fills the rooms, but the wisdom that governs the household. Ask God for it as you set up your routines, your budget of time and your habits of speaking kindly. Read all of Proverbs 24.

3. Matthew 7:24-25

"“Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, who built his house on a rock. The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it didn’t fall, for it was founded on the rock."

Jesus describes a wise builder whose house stood through rain, flood and wind because it was founded on the rock. Storms will come to every home, so the question is what you are building on. Make hearing and doing Christ's words the habit that keeps your family steady. Read all of Matthew 7.

4. Proverbs 15:16-17

"Better is little, with the fear of Yahweh, than great treasure with trouble. Better is a dinner of herbs, where love is, than a fattened calf with hatred."

Better is a small meal where there is love than a fattened calf with hatred. A new home does not need to be big or perfectly decorated to be blessed. What makes a house a home is the love and the reverence for God that fill it. Make that your first priority. Read all of Proverbs 15.

Blessing and Protection for Your House

5. Numbers 6:24-26

"‘Yahweh bless you, and keep you. Yahweh make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. Yahweh lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’"

This blessing was given to Israel by the priests, and you can speak it over your new home and each person who lives there. Ask the Lord to bless, keep, show his face and give peace. You might read it aloud at your housewarming or write it on a card. Read all of Numbers 6.

6. Psalm 91:1-2

"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of Yahweh, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.”"

Whoever dwells in the secret place of the Most High rests in the shadow of the Almighty, and can say: he is my refuge and my fortress. A house gives shelter from weather, but God gives shelter for the soul. Make him your true dwelling place, and your home will be a refuge for others too. Read all of Psalm 91.

7. Deuteronomy 28:6

"You shall be blessed when you come in, and you shall be blessed when you go out."

You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out. Doors are places of transition: leaving for work or school, returning tired in the evening. Pray this blessing at your front door, asking God to meet each member of your household on both sides of the threshold. Read all of Deuteronomy 28.

8. Psalm 121:8

"Yahweh will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more."

The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in, now and forever. This is a lovely prayer to say whenever someone leaves home or returns. Pray it for the children heading to school, for a spouse driving to work, and for yourself. God's care follows you beyond your front door. Read all of Psalm 121.

Peace Within Your Walls

9. Luke 10:5-6

"Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house.’ If a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you."

Jesus told his disciples to say first, as they entered a house, peace be to this house. Make that your first word in your new home. Let it be what your guests hear, what your family feels, and what you ask of God in every room. Peace is meant to be received and spread. Read all of Luke 10.

10. Isaiah 32:18

"My people will live in a peaceful habitation, in safe dwellings, and in quiet resting places,"

God promises his people a peaceful habitation, safe dwellings and quiet resting places. Your home can be a small picture of this promise. Ask him to make it a place where voices are lowered, arguments are settled quickly and everyone, including you, can truly rest. Read all of Isaiah 32.

11. Colossians 3:15

"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body, and be thankful."

Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, and be thankful. Peace is not only the absence of noise; it is a ruler who has the final say. When tension rises in your home, stop and invite Christ's peace to decide. Gratitude helps it settle in. Read all of Colossians 3.

12. Psalm 4:8

"In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety."

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me live in safety. The first night in a new home can be restless. Take this verse as your bedtime prayer, and entrust everyone under your roof to the One who never sleeps. Rest well, because you are secure in him. Read all of Psalm 4.

An Open Door for Others

13. Hebrews 13:2

"Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for in doing so, some have entertained angels without knowing it."

Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for in doing so some have entertained angels without knowing it. A new home is a chance to open your door. Invite a neighbor, a lonely friend or a new family from church to a simple meal. You may be blessing more than you realize. Read all of Hebrews 13.

14. 1 Peter 4:9

"Be hospitable to one another without grumbling."

Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. Hospitality is not a performance; it is warmth. Your home does not need to be spotless to welcome people. Offer what you have, with a cheerful heart, and trust that God will multiply the effect of your open door. Read all of 1 Peter 4.

15. Romans 12:13

"contributing to the needs of the saints; given to hospitality."

Paul links hospitality with contributing to the needs of the saints. A Christian home is not only a private refuge but a resource for others. Think about how your new space can serve your church family: a small group, a meal for someone in need, a room for a traveler. Read all of Romans 12.

Gratitude for Your New Home

16. Psalm 16:6

"The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places. Yes, I have a good inheritance."

The lines have fallen in pleasant places, and I have a good inheritance. David sees his life as a gift. If God has given you a new home, take a moment to say thank you. Notice the light in the windows, the table, the quiet corner, and receive them as gifts, not entitlements. Read all of Psalm 16.

17. Psalm 118:24

"This is the day that Yahweh has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!"

This is the day the Lord has made, and we will rejoice and be glad in it. Your moving day, your first dinner, your first ordinary Tuesday evening in the new house are all days the Lord has made. Choose joy, even if boxes are still unpacked. Read all of Psalm 118.

18. Psalm 107:1

"Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever."

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, and his loving kindness endures forever. Gratitude turns a house into a home. Say this verse together as a family at your first meal. Name specific things you are grateful for, and let thanksgiving become a rhythm in your household. Read all of Psalm 107.

19. Psalm 23:6

"Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in Yahweh’s house forever."

Goodness and loving kindness will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the Lord's house forever. Whatever home you have on earth, you are ultimately a guest in God's house. That perspective makes you generous, grateful and free from fear of loss. Read all of Psalm 23.

20. John 14:2

"In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you."

Jesus says there are many homes in his Father's house, and he is preparing a place for us. Your new house is a gift for now, but the true home is still ahead. Hold your house with joy, and your hope in Christ even more tightly. Read all of John 14.
