Introduction
You are leaving, or someone you love is hitting the road, and you want to entrust them to God. This page offers prayers to say aloud or to copy, sorted by situation: the departure, a loved one, a long journey, a mission, the return. They speak to God with trust, without asking him for the impossible. Choose the one that fits you and adapt it with your own words.
Prayer Before Leaving on a Trip
Say it on the doorstep, as you close the door, or as a family before getting into the car. A few sentences are enough.
"Lord, before I step through the door, I place myself in your hands. You know the road, the unexpected events and the encounters that await me. Keep my mind at peace and my steps attentive. May this trip bring me closer to you, wherever the destination."
"Father, I am leaving with my suitcases and with my worries. I lay both before you. You are the God who goes with those who set out. Walk with us today and give us wisdom to decide well when things do not go as planned."
"Lord Jesus, thank you for this trip that we were able to prepare. Bless those who stay home and those who go. May we know how to thank you at every stage, and remember you even in the tiredness of departures."
"Faithful God, I entrust to you my home, my work and my loved ones while I am away. I cannot control everything, but you keep watch. Teach me to rest in your hand and to enjoy this time with gratitude."
Prayer for a Loved One Who Is Traveling
When the other person leaves, you are the one who waits. This prayer lets you give them something concrete: your trust placed in God.
"Lord, you know the one who is taking the road today, and I entrust him to you. Watch over him at every mile. Give him vigilance and patience. And give me the peace of not being there to follow him."
"Father, my daughter is going far from me for a while. You love her more than I do, I believe that. Keep her in train stations, in unfamiliar streets and in her choices. May she feel that you are with her, and may I be able to sleep in peace."
"God of all comfort, my parents are flying for the first time in a long while. I entrust them to you. Give them serenity, kind people along their way and a calm return. I am not asking you for the impossible, I am asking for your presence."
Prayer for a Long Trip by Car or Plane
The road and the sky call for caution above all. Praying does not excuse you from stopping, sleeping and following the rules, but it puts the journey in the right perspective.
"Lord, we are going to spend hours on the road. Give the driver vigilance, patience and rest when needed. Teach us to stop without pushing too hard. May every mile be placed in your keeping, and may the road also bring us a little joy."
"Father, the road is long and tiredness lies in wait. Keep the one who drives, keep those who sleep on the back seat. We thank you for your grace, and we commit not to count on it to excuse our carelessness."
"Lord, I am getting on this plane with a little fear, and you know it. Calm my heart, as you calmed the waves. I do not know what the flight holds, but I know I am in your hand, up high as down below. Give peace to my neighbors as well."
"God of heaven and earth, bless the crew, the pilots and all those who work behind the scenes so that we can travel. Give them wisdom and clarity. And us, during these hours in the air, help us to be kind, patient and grateful."
Prayer for a Mission Trip and Prayer on Returning
A team leaving to serve can pray together before departure. And on the return, a word of gratitude closes the trip before God.
"Lord, you send, and we go. We are going to people we do not know yet and whom you already love. Give us the humility to learn, the courage to speak and the patience to listen. Keep our team united when weariness rises."
"Father, I am leaving to serve far from home, and my heart is divided. I entrust to you those I leave behind and those I will meet. May my service depend not on my strength but on your presence. Make us faithful witnesses, even in small things."
"Lord, we have arrived. Thank you for the road, for the unexpected events that went well and even for those that taught us something. We recognize your hand in this trip. Help us to go home with a grateful heart."
"Father, here I am back home, a little tired and very grateful. I thank you for your faithfulness while I was away. Help me to return to my daily life without forgetting what I received along the way, and may it bear fruit around me."
Verses for Praying Before a Trip
These verses do not guarantee a trip without incident: they speak of God's presence at the departure as at the arrival. You can read them aloud before leaving.
Psalm 121:8
"Yahweh will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more."
A pilgrim's verse, made for those who set out. It speaks of a God who goes with you at the departure as at the arrival, and it is often the first one people read before hitting the road. Read all of Psalm 121.
Psalm 91:11
"For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways."
It speaks of God's guard over our paths. It invites trust without excusing us from caution: read it with gratitude, not as insurance against every unexpected event. Read all of Psalm 91.
Exodus 33:14
"He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."
Moses had asked God to walk with his people. The answer suits every traveler: what matters, more than the destination, is not setting out alone. Read all of Exodus 33.
Joshua 1:9
"Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go."
A verse for someone setting out into the unknown, for a move, a mission trip or a long absence. It speaks of courage resting on God's presence. Read all of Joshua 1.
How to Pray Before a Trip
Take two minutes before leaving, even standing in the entryway. Name the journey, the people who go with you and those who stay. A specific prayer is better than a vague one.
Ask for what the Bible invites you to ask for: God's presence, wisdom, vigilance, peace of heart. Avoid demanding the assurance that nothing will happen, because God has not promised it.
In the car, pray with your eyes open if you are the driver, or aloud if someone else prays for all of you. Children remember these moments of prayer as a family.
On the return, also take a moment to give thanks. Giving thanks after the trip is a way of acknowledging that the road did not depend on you alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you ask God to protect a trip?
Yes. The Bible invites us to entrust our ways to God, and he delights in our doing so. Praying for a trip is not a guarantee against accidents, but a way of placing yourself in his hands with trust while staying careful.
What should I say if I am anxious about flying?
Simply tell God, in your own words: fear is not a lack of faith. You can read a verse about trust, breathe calmly and entrust the flight to him. If the anxiety is strong, also talk about it with someone you trust.
Can you pray as a family before leaving by car?
Yes, and it is a good habit. A thirty-second prayer before starting the engine is enough: you give thanks, ask for vigilance for the driver, and entrust the passengers. Children can even say it in turn.
What should I pray for a loved one who has gone abroad?
Pray for their health, their safety, the people they meet, and the peace of their heart. You can also send them a short message saying that you are praying for them. Knowing that you are carried in prayer is very comforting.
