Introduction
Running a small business means carrying many hats: owner, manager, accountant, salesperson, and often the one who loses sleep over payroll. The Bible speaks to every one of these roles. These 20 verses, quoted from the World English Bible, are grouped into five themes: integrity in everyday dealings, diligence in your work, trusting God for provision, generosity toward people, and rest when the pressure is high. Use them to start your week, to pin on the wall of your workshop or office, or to encourage a friend who has just opened a shop. They are timeless principles, not promises of profit.
Integrity in Everyday Dealings
1. Proverbs 11:1
"A false balance is an abomination to Yahweh, but accurate weights are his delight."
In the ancient marketplace, false scales cheated customers. God hates that, and he delights in honest weights. The principle applies to invoices, estimates, advertising and measurements today. An honest business may grow more slowly at first, but it builds a reputation that no marketing can buy. Read all of Proverbs 11.
2. Proverbs 10:9
"He who walks blamelessly walks surely, but he who perverts his ways will be found out."
Walking with integrity brings security, while crooked ways are eventually found out. Shortcuts in taxes, contracts or quality may seem to help today, yet they carry a hidden cost. Choose the clear path and sleep better: you will have nothing to hide and nothing to fear when someone looks closely. Read all of Proverbs 10.
3. Luke 16:10
"He who is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much. He who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much."
Jesus says that faithfulness in small things shows faithfulness in large ones. In business, the little details matter: the promised call-back, the exact change, the clean workspace, the correct receipt. Treat small tasks as acts of worship, and trust that God notices them. Faithful habits in small matters protect the big ones. Read all of Luke 16.
4. Colossians 3:23
"And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men,"
Work heartily, as for the Lord and not for people. If you own a business, your real boss is God. That changes how you treat customers, suppliers and employees. Do the job well even when no one is checking, and offer each day's work to him with a prayer of thanks. Read all of Colossians 3.
Diligence in Your Work
5. Proverbs 10:4
"He becomes poor who works with a lazy hand, but the hand of the diligent brings wealth."
The Bible praises diligence and warns against laziness. A diligent hand brings wealth, in the sense of fruitful work and provision. It is not a guarantee that every effort pays off, but a principle of wisdom: steady effort tends to bear fruit. Show up, follow through and keep learning. Read all of Proverbs 10.
6. Proverbs 21:5
"The plans of the diligent surely lead to profit; and everyone who is hasty surely rushes to poverty."
Plans made with diligence lead to profit, while haste leads to poverty. Entrepreneurs love speed, yet wise ones plan before they leap. Take time for a budget, a forecast and counsel from people with experience. Pray over the plan, then move forward carefully, one step at a time. Read all of Proverbs 21.
7. Proverbs 22:29
"Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve kings. He won’t serve obscure men."
Skill in one's work leads to standing before kings, not obscure men. Excellence matters. This verse encourages you to develop your craft, whether you are a baker, an electrician or a designer. Use the abilities God gave you to the full, and let your quality speak for your business. Read all of Proverbs 22.
8. Proverbs 14:23
"In all hard work there is profit, but the talk of the lips leads only to poverty."
In all hard work there is profit, but mere talk leads to poverty. Many dreams stay dreams because nobody starts. This verse is a gentle push to act: make the call, send the quote, open the shop. Small, consistent actions turn ideas into real businesses, and prayer keeps your heart steady along the way. Read all of Proverbs 14.
Trusting God for Provision
9. Proverbs 16:3
"Commit your deeds to Yahweh, and your plans shall succeed."
Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established. This is an invitation to bring your business into prayer, not a formula for guaranteed results. Surrender the outcomes to him: name your goals, ask for wisdom, and accept that he may shape the plans in unexpected ways. Read all of Proverbs 16.
10. Proverbs 3:5-6
"Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight."
Trust the Lord with all your heart and do not lean only on your own understanding. Business decisions involve risk, and no spreadsheet removes all uncertainty. Acknowledge God in your choices about hiring, pricing and expansion, and ask him to make your path straight when the numbers do not settle the question. Read all of Proverbs 3.
11. Matthew 6:33
"But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well."
Seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness, and the rest will be given. Jesus is not telling you to neglect your business; he is teaching you about priorities. When God comes first, work finds its right place. Ask yourself each week: is my business serving my faith, my family and my neighbor? Read all of Matthew 6.
12. Philippians 4:19
"My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus."
God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in Christ Jesus. Notice that this is a promise about needs, not every want. On a tight month, bring your numbers honestly to him, act wisely, and look for the ways he provides, often through customers, friends and unexpected help. Read all of Philippians 4.
Generosity Toward People
13. Proverbs 11:25
"The liberal soul shall be made fat. He who waters shall be watered also himself."
The generous person will prosper, and whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. A business can bless its neighborhood: through fair prices, tips, donations or free help for someone in need. Generosity is not a loss to the bottom line; it is a way of loving others with what you have been given. Read all of Proverbs 11.
14. 2 Corinthians 9:7
"Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."
God loves a cheerful giver, one who gives from the heart and not under compulsion. Decide ahead of time what you will give from your income, so that generosity becomes a habit rather than a reaction. Cheerful giving is a form of worship that frees you from the grip of money. Read all of 2 Corinthians 9.
15. Colossians 4:1
"Masters, give to your servants that which is just and equal, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven."
Paul tells masters to treat their workers justly and fairly, remembering that they too have a Master in heaven. If you employ people, this applies to wages, schedules and the way you speak to them. Treat your staff as people God loves, and thank them often. A fair and kind workplace is a quiet testimony. Read all of Colossians 4.
16. Proverbs 3:27
"Don’t withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do it."
Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it is in your power to do it. Pay your suppliers on time, return what you owe and keep your promises to customers. Doing the right thing promptly builds trust, protects relationships and honors the Lord. Read all of Proverbs 3.
Rest When the Pressure Is High
17. Psalm 127:2
"It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil, for he gives sleep to his loved ones."
Rising early and staying up late to eat the bread of anxious toil is vain, for God gives sleep to those he loves. This is not an excuse for laziness, but a reminder that your worth is not measured by hours. Trust God to carry what you cannot finish tonight. Read all of Psalm 127.
18. Mark 6:31
"He said to them, “You come apart into a deserted place, and rest awhile.” For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat."
Jesus told his tired disciples to come away to a quiet place and rest a while, even when many people were coming and going. Even he saw the need to stop. Schedule real rest: a day off, a walk, an hour of silence. Your business will be better for it. Read all of Mark 6.
19. Psalm 4:8
"In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety."
The psalmist lies down in peace and sleeps, because the Lord alone makes him dwell in safety. Many owners lie awake with worries about cash flow or customers. Before sleep, hand your list to God in prayer. You cannot control everything, but you can trust the one who does. Read all of Psalm 4.
20. 1 Peter 5:7
"casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you."
Cast all your worries on God, because he cares for you. He cares about your payroll, your slow season and your fear of failing. Name each worry in prayer and give it to him, then do the next wise thing in front of you. He carries the weight with you. Read all of 1 Peter 5.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Bible say about running a business?
The Bible values honest work, fair dealing, diligence and generosity. Proverbs 11:1 warns against dishonest scales, and Colossians 3:23 invites us to work as for the Lord. It also reminds us that God provides and that rest is part of a healthy life.
Is it wrong for a Christian to want a profitable business?
No. Profit can fund good work, pay fair wages and support generosity. The question is what rules your heart. Jesus teaches in Matthew 6:33 to seek God's kingdom first, so that income serves your faith and your neighbor and does not become an idol.
Which Bible verse can I put on the wall of my shop or office?
Short verses work best, such as Proverbs 16:3, Colossians 3:23 or Psalm 127:1. Choose one that expresses your values, and let it remind you each day why you work. If you serve the public, keep the wording gentle and welcoming.
