Introduction
Every church runs on volunteers: those who set up chairs, teach children, greet visitors, run the sound desk, cook meals and visit the lonely. Their work is often quiet and rarely noticed, yet it matters deeply to God. These 20 verses, quoted from the World English Bible, are grouped into five themes: serving with joy, using your gifts, persevering when you are tired, being seen by God, and serving in the strength he supplies. Use them to encourage yourself, to write a thank-you card to a volunteer, or to open a team meeting with a short reading. Take one verse a week and let it refresh your service.
Serving with Joy
1. Psalm 100:2
"Serve Yahweh with gladness. Come before his presence with singing."
Serve the Lord with gladness and come before him with singing. Service is not meant to be a grim duty but a joyful response to a God who has loved us first. When your volunteering feels heavy, begin with thanksgiving. Remember who you are serving, and let gladness return to your hands and your heart. Read all of Psalm 100.
2. Galatians 5:13
"For you, brothers, were called for freedom. Only don’t use your freedom for gain to the flesh, but through love be servants to one another."
We were called to freedom, but not freedom to please ourselves. Paul says to use it to serve one another in love. Volunteering is freedom in action: you choose to give your time because love moves you, not because anyone forces you. That kind of service is joyful and strong. Read all of Galatians 5.
3. 1 Peter 4:10
"As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms."
Each of us has received a gift, and Peter says to use it to serve others as faithful stewards of God's varied grace. Your gift may be organizing, listening, cooking, teaching or fixing things. It is a gift of grace to be shared, not a prize to be proud of. Ask what God has placed in your hands. Read all of 1 Peter 4.
4. Colossians 3:23
"And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men,"
Whatever you do, do it heartily as for the Lord. Whether you are stacking chairs or preparing a lesson, you are not doing it for the pastor or the committee but for him. That thought turns small tasks into worship, and it keeps you from needing applause. Read all of Colossians 3.
Using Your Gifts
5. 1 Corinthians 12:4
"Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit."
There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. The church is not made of identical parts, and no volunteer has to look like another. Celebrate the variety: some gifts are loud, some are quiet, and all come from one Giver. Be thankful for the gifts of others and humble about your own. Read all of 1 Corinthians 12.
6. 1 Corinthians 12:7
"But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit of all."
The Spirit gives each person a gift for the common good. That means your gift is not only for you: it is meant to benefit the whole church. If you wonder whether your contribution matters, consider who is helped by it each week, and keep offering it in love. Read all of 1 Corinthians 12.
7. 1 Corinthians 12:18
"But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body, just as he desired."
God has placed each member in the body just as he wanted. That includes you, in the place where you serve. You are not an accident or a replacement part. If you are unsure where you fit, pray, try a few ministries, and ask trusted friends where they see God's gifts in you. Read all of 1 Corinthians 12.
8. 1 Corinthians 12:22
"No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary."
The parts of the body that seem weaker are necessary. Often, the volunteers who work behind the scenes, in the kitchen, the nursery or the parking lot, seem least visible, yet the church could not function without them. Say thank you to the quiet servants today, and mean it, because they make everything else possible. Read all of 1 Corinthians 12.
Perseverance When You Are Tired
9. Galatians 6:9
"Let’s not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up."
Do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season you will reap if you do not give up. Volunteer fatigue is real. If you are tired, rest, ask for help and reduce your load if you must. Yet remember that faithful service always bears fruit in the Lord's time. Read all of Galatians 6.
10. 2 Thessalonians 3:13
"But you, brothers, don’t be weary in doing what is right."
Do not be weary in doing what is right. Paul wrote this to a church where some had grown tired of serving. It is a simple word of encouragement for anyone who feels the energy fading. Keep your eyes on the Lord, not on the volume of tasks, and ask him for new strength this week. Read all of 2 Thessalonians 3.
11. 1 Corinthians 15:58
"Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord."
Be steadfast and always abounding in the Lord's work, because your labor is not in vain in him. A volunteer may not see results for years, yet Paul says that nothing done in the Lord is wasted. Every hug, every lesson and every set-up counts for eternity. Read all of 1 Corinthians 15.
12. Hebrews 6:10
"For God is not unrighteous, so as to forget your work and the labor of love which you showed toward his name, in that you served the saints, and still do serve them."
God is not unjust, so he will not forget your work and the love you have shown for his name by serving his people. This is a deep comfort for anyone whose service goes unthanked. People may forget, but God does not. Take heart, and keep serving with a free and grateful spirit. Read all of Hebrews 6.
Seen by God
13. Matthew 6:3-4
"But when you do merciful deeds, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand does, so that your merciful deeds may be in secret, then your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly."
Jesus teaches that giving and serving should not be a performance. Do it quietly, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. This frees us from needing recognition. When no one thanks you, you can smile, because the best audience is already watching with love. Read all of Matthew 6.
14. Matthew 10:42
"Whoever gives one of these little ones just a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, most certainly I tell you he will in no way lose his reward.”"
Even a cup of cold water given in Jesus' name does not lose its reward. Nothing is too small. A smile at the door, a phone call or a ride to church is noticed by the Lord. Let this free you from comparing your service with others. Faithful small things are great in his eyes. Read all of Matthew 10.
15. Matthew 25:21
"“His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’"
Well done, good and faithful servant. These are the words every believer longs to hear. The master praises faithfulness over a few things, not greatness. You do not have to do impressive work; you have to be faithful. One day you will hear him say, Enter into the joy of your Lord. Read all of Matthew 25.
16. Colossians 3:24
"knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ."
Remember that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward, for you serve the Lord Christ. Your volunteer work is not unpaid; it is paid in a currency that does not fade. Let that promise steady you when your effort feels unseen, and serve the Lord Christ with a full heart. Read all of Colossians 3.
Serving in His Strength
17. Mark 10:45
"For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”"
Jesus came not to be served but to serve and to give his life for many. He is both our Lord and our model. Every time you take a towel, a ladle or a broom for others, you follow in his footsteps. Let his humble love shape your attitude toward every task in the church. Read all of Mark 10.
18. John 13:14
"If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet."
If the Lord and Teacher washed his disciples' feet, we also ought to serve one another. Foot washing was the work of the lowest servant, yet Jesus did it with love. No task in your church is beneath you. Look for the thing nobody wants to do, and do it with joy. Read all of John 13.
19. Isaiah 40:31
"but those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint."
Those who wait for the Lord renew their strength, mount up with wings like eagles, run and not grow weary, and walk and not faint. Your strength for service is not yours alone. Take time before you serve to pray, even briefly, and receive from him what you will need to give. Read all of Isaiah 40.
20. Philippians 4:13
"I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me."
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. This is not a promise of unlimited ability but of Christ's strength for what he calls you to do. Whatever is on your serving list this week, bring it to him in prayer and expect him to supply what you lack. Read all of Philippians 4.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Bible verse can I use to thank a church volunteer?
Hebrews 6:10 is a lovely choice: God does not forget your work and the love you have shown for his name. Galatians 6:9 and 1 Corinthians 15:58 also encourage. Add a specific thank-you, such as naming something they did recently.
How do I avoid burnout as a church volunteer?
Rest is part of faithful service. Jesus himself withdrew to pray and rest. Say no when you are overloaded, share tasks with others and take regular breaks. Isaiah 40:31 reminds us that strength is renewed as we wait on the Lord. A healthy volunteer serves longer and more joyfully.
How do I find the right place to serve in my church?
Start by praying and asking what gifts and passions God has given you. Talk with your pastor or ministry leaders, try a short-term role, and ask trusted friends what they see in you. 1 Corinthians 12:18 reminds us that God places each member where he wants.
