Introduction
The first day of school mixes excitement and nerves, for children, for teenagers and for the parents who watch them walk away. New classrooms, new faces and new expectations can feel big. The Bible offers simple words to carry into the day. These 20 verses, quoted from the World English Bible, are grouped into five themes: God goes with you, wisdom and learning, courage when you feel nervous, friends and kindness, and blessings for teens and parents. Read one at breakfast, tuck one into a lunch box, or pray one in the car. A short verse said with love can stay in a child's heart all day long.
God Goes with You
1. Joshua 1:9
"Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.”"
Be strong and courageous, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Say this to your child at the school gate. The classroom may be new, but the God who goes with them is not. Let this verse be a little backpack promise that travels everywhere they do. Read all of Joshua 1.
2. Isaiah 41:10
"Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness."
Do not be afraid, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. A nervous child can hold on to these words like a hand. God promises to strengthen, help and uphold. Read it slowly before the door, and let the child say it back to you in their own words. Read all of Isaiah 41.
3. Psalm 139:9-10
"If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me."
Even if I rise on the wings of the dawn and settle at the far side of the sea, God's hand will lead me and hold me. A school can feel far away from home, but no place is beyond God's reach. Remind your child that wherever they sit today, God sits with them. Read all of Psalm 139.
4. Exodus 33:14
"He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”"
The Lord says that his presence will go with us and give us rest. Rest is a surprising gift for the first day of school, yet it is exactly what a worried heart needs. Pray together that God's presence will quiet the stomach butterflies and give a calm spirit in a busy new place. Read all of Exodus 33.
Wisdom and Learning
5. Proverbs 1:7
"The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction."
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Respecting and loving God puts all learning in its right place, because every subject, from math to music to science, points to the Creator. Encourage your child to be curious and to thank God for the mind he gave them. Read all of Proverbs 1.
6. Proverbs 2:6
"For Yahweh gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding."
The Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. A child can ask him for help in learning, just as they would ask a teacher. Pray before homework or a test: Lord, please help me to understand. Prayer does not replace study, but it does invite God into it. Read all of Proverbs 2.
7. Proverbs 4:7
"Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom. Yes, though it costs all your possessions, get understanding."
Wisdom is supreme, so get wisdom, and with all your getting, get understanding. Knowing facts is good, but wisdom is knowing how to use them well. Talk with your child about the difference. A wise student asks good questions, listens carefully and treats others kindly, and that is a goal worth praying for every morning. Read all of Proverbs 4.
8. Luke 2:52
"And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men."
Jesus increased in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and people. He grew in mind, body, spirit and relationships. A good school year can aim for the same balance: learning, play, faith and friendship. Pray that your child will grow in every one of these areas. Read all of Luke 2.
Courage When You Feel Nervous
9. 2 Timothy 1:7
"For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control."
God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and self-control. Feeling nervous is normal and not a sin. This verse reminds children that God also gives what they need: strength to try, love for others and calm choices. Say it together before getting out of the car. Read all of 2 Timothy 1.
10. Psalm 56:3
"When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you."
When I am afraid, I will trust in you. It is a short prayer that even a young child can learn by heart. Teach it as a sentence to whisper whenever fear arrives: in the hallway, before a presentation, at lunch. It tells the child that fear is a signal to turn to God. Read all of Psalm 56.
11. Psalm 118:6
"Yahweh is on my side. I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?"
The Lord is on my side, so I will not be afraid. This is a brave verse for a child who worries about being laughed at or left out. Having God on your side does not mean everything will be easy, but it means you are never alone. Practice saying it with confidence. Read all of Psalm 118.
12. Psalm 4:8
"In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety."
I will lie down in peace and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. First days of school can bring restless nights. Read this verse at bedtime with your child, and ask God to give peaceful sleep and a fresh, rested start tomorrow. Read all of Psalm 4.
Friends and Kindness
13. Proverbs 17:17
"A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity."
A friend loves at all times. Many children fear that they will not find a friend on the first day. This verse says what real friendship looks like, and invites them to be that kind of friend: someone who includes others, stays loyal and cares in hard moments. Read all of Proverbs 17.
14. Proverbs 13:20
"One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm."
One who walks with the wise grows wise. The people we spend time with shape us. Pray that your child will find good friends who encourage kindness, honesty and courage. Teach them also to be the person who makes a new classmate feel welcome, because kindness often opens the door to friendship. Read all of Proverbs 13.
15. Ephesians 4:32
"And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you."
Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other as God in Christ forgave you. Playground arguments and classroom hurts are inevitable. This verse gives children a way through: be kind, say sorry quickly and forgive. These habits last a lifetime, and they begin with small choices on an ordinary school day. Read all of Ephesians 4.
16. Matthew 7:12
"Therefore whatever you desire for men to do to you, you shall also do to them; for this is the law and the prophets."
Whatever you want others to do for you, do the same for them. Children easily understand this golden rule: share, include, listen, say please. Make it a daily goal: look for one chance today to treat someone the way you would like to be treated. Talk about it at dinner and share how it went. Read all of Matthew 7.
Blessings for Teens and Parents
17. 1 Timothy 4:12
"Let no man despise your youth; but be an example to those who believe, in word, in your way of life, in love, in spirit, in faith, and in purity."
Let no one despise your youth, but set an example in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity. This is a great verse for teenagers starting a new year. They may feel small among older students, yet they can be a quiet example. Encourage them to see their influence as real. Read all of 1 Timothy 4.
18. Proverbs 22:6
"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it."
Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Parents, this is a verse for you. It is a principle of wisdom, not a guarantee, but it encourages every prayer, bedtime story and quiet example. Keep sowing seeds. God is the one who makes them grow. Read all of Proverbs 22.
19. Psalm 119:105
"Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path."
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light on my path. A lamp shows the next steps, not the whole road. This is a good verse for a student at the start of a long school year. Ask God to guide each day, one step at a time, as you read his word together. Read all of Psalm 119.
20. Numbers 6:24-26
"‘Yahweh bless you, and keep you. Yahweh make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. Yahweh lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’"
This ancient blessing is perfect to speak over a child or teen as they leave the house: may the Lord bless you and keep you, make his face shine on you and give you peace. Place a hand on their shoulder, say it slowly, and send them out with God's peace. Read all of Numbers 6.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good Bible verse for the first day of school?
Joshua 1:9 is a favorite, because it promises that God is with you wherever you go. Psalm 56:3 is short and easy for children to memorize. Choose one verse, write it on a note for a lunch box or backpack, and pray it together at the door.
How can I help my child feel less nervous about school?
Listen to their worries without hurrying to fix them, then pray together. Short verses like Isaiah 41:10 can be repeated as a calm phrase. Visit the school ahead of time if possible, and keep morning routines steady. If worry is intense or lasts, talk with the teacher or a counselor.
Can parents pray a blessing over their children before school?
Yes. Many families make it a morning habit. Numbers 6:24-26 is a classic blessing, and it takes less than a minute. Place a hand on your child's shoulder, say the words slowly and smile. Children remember the warmth long after they have forgotten the details.
