Introduction
An engagement is a joyful season, and it is also a time to pray, prepare and listen. Before the wedding day, two people are learning what it means to belong to each other under God. These 20 verses, quoted from the World English Bible, are grouped into five themes: two becoming one, the shape of real love, patience and forgiveness, choosing each other wisely, and building a home on Christ. Use them to write an engagement card, to pray together as a couple, or to share with friends who are preparing for marriage. Read one verse a week as you plan your wedding and your life together.
Two Becoming One
1. Genesis 2:24
"Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh."
From the beginning, marriage is described as leaving, joining and becoming one. Leaving means putting your new family first, while still honoring your parents. Joining means a committed bond, not a trial. Engagement is a good time to talk about what each of you will leave behind and what you will build together. Read all of Genesis 2.
2. Genesis 2:18
"Yahweh God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper comparable to him.”"
God saw that it was not good for the man to be alone and made a companion for him. Marriage is part of God's design for human life, a place of help, partnership and shared purpose. Thank God for the person he has brought into your life, and ask him to make you a true helper to each other. Read all of Genesis 2.
3. Mark 10:8-9
"and the two will become one flesh, so that they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.”"
Jesus teaches that husband and wife are no longer two, but one flesh, and that what God has joined together should not be separated. These words are weighty and also hopeful: marriage is not your invention alone, but something God himself holds. Ask him to guard your relationship from the very start. Read all of Mark 10.
4. Ecclesiastes 4:9
"Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor."
Two are better than one because their work brings a good return. Marriage multiplies what a person can do alone: dreams, resources, courage and joy. Take a moment to name specific strengths your future spouse brings, and thank them for these gifts. That kind of gratitude builds a marriage before it begins. Read all of Ecclesiastes 4.
The Shape of Real Love
5. 1 Corinthians 13:4
"Love is patient and is kind. Love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud,"
Paul does not describe love as a feeling that comes and goes, but as patience and kindness chosen again and again. Use this verse as a checklist for the months ahead: where do we need more patience, and where more kindness? Real love is learned in small decisions, long before the wedding day. Read all of 1 Corinthians 13.
6. Song of Songs 8:7
"Many waters can’t quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man would give all the wealth of his house for love, he would be utterly scorned."
Many waters cannot quench love, and floods cannot drown it. The Song of Solomon celebrates a faithful love that is stronger than pressure and cannot be bought. Let this verse remind you that love grows through loyalty over time, and ask God to protect the love he has begun between you. Read all of Song of Songs 8.
7. Colossians 3:14
"Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection."
Above everything else, put on love, which binds all the other virtues together in perfect harmony. Patience, kindness and forgiveness hold when love ties them together. As your wedding approaches, ask God to deepen your love for each other so that your good qualities work together instead of competing. Read all of Colossians 3.
8. 1 John 4:7
"Beloved, let’s love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves has been born of God, and knows God."
Love comes from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Your love for each other is not only a human story; it is rooted in God's love for you. Return to the source often, because he is the one who keeps love alive when feelings change. Read all of 1 John 4.
Patience and Forgiveness
9. Ephesians 4:2
"with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love,"
Paul asks for humility, gentleness, patience and bearing with one another in love. These qualities are not for perfect people but for people who live closely together. You are about to share a home, a budget and a calendar. Start practicing patience now, in small things, so that it grows strong for the big ones. Read all of Ephesians 4.
10. Ephesians 4:32
"And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you."
Be kind, be tender-hearted and forgive each other as God in Christ forgave you. Every marriage needs a habit of quick apology and generous forgiveness. Decide early that when you hurt each other, you will not keep score, but will come back and say sorry. That choice protects love through the years. Read all of Ephesians 4.
11. Colossians 3:13
"bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do."
Bearing with one another is a realistic phrase: it admits that you will annoy each other at times. Paul does not tell us to pretend otherwise. He says to be patient and forgive, as Christ has forgiven you. When you remember how much you have been forgiven, it becomes easier to forgive the one you love. Read all of Colossians 3.
12. 1 Peter 4:8
"And above all things be earnest in your love among yourselves, for love covers a multitude of sins."
Peter says to be earnest in love above all, because love covers a multitude of sins. That does not hide wrongs; it chooses grace over keeping score. Before the wedding, practice letting small offenses go. A home where love covers more than it exposes is a safe place to grow. Read all of 1 Peter 4.
Choosing Each Other Wisely
13. Proverbs 18:22
"Whoever finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor of Yahweh."
Finding a spouse is called finding a good thing and receiving favor from the Lord. If you are engaged, you can thank God for this gift, and not take it for granted. Say it out loud to each other: I am glad God brought us together. Gratitude at the start gives your marriage a warm foundation. Read all of Proverbs 18.
14. Ruth 1:16
"Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God."
Ruth's words to Naomi are often read at weddings: where you go, I will go; your people will be my people, and your God my God. They show loyalty, shared life and shared faith. As you prepare for marriage, talk about what it means to follow the same God, and to walk together in the same direction. Read all of Ruth 1.
15. Amos 3:3
"Do two walk together, unless they have agreed?"
Two people cannot walk together unless they have agreed on the direction. Do you agree about faith, money, family, children and how you will serve? Honest talks now prevent painful surprises later. Pray for wisdom, and consider meeting with a pastor or a mentor couple for guidance. Read all of Amos 3.
16. Proverbs 3:5-6
"Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight."
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. Planning a wedding can feel like a thousand decisions, and a marriage is the biggest one. Pray together over your choices, ask for wise counsel from people who love you, and trust that God will make your path straight. Read all of Proverbs 3.
Building a Home on Christ
17. Proverbs 24:3
"Through wisdom a house is built; by understanding it is established;"
By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established. A home is more than walls and furniture: it is shaped by the habits and values you choose. Ask God for wisdom to build a household of peace, prayer and generosity, and begin laying that foundation in your engagement. Read all of Proverbs 24.
18. Matthew 7:24
"“Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, who built his house on a rock."
Jesus compares those who hear his words and put them into practice to a wise builder who built his house on rock. A marriage built on obedience to Christ can face storms without falling. Decide together to read Scripture, pray and worship regularly, so that your foundation is already solid on the wedding day. Read all of Matthew 7.
19. Ecclesiastes 4:12
"If a man prevails against one who is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken."
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Many couples read this verse as a picture of husband, wife and God woven together. When the Lord is at the center of your relationship, your bond is stronger than either of you could make it alone. Invite him into your conversations and plans. Read all of Ecclesiastes 4.
20. Colossians 3:17
"Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him."
Whatever you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God. Imagine a marriage where every conversation, every budget decision and every ordinary day is offered to him. That is a Christ-centered home: nothing is outside his care, and thanksgiving fills the house. Read all of Colossians 3.
