20 Bible Verses About Truth

9 min read

Introduction

In a world where information travels fast and the true is mixed with the false, truth sometimes seems fragile. The Bible gives it a central place. It does not present it first as an idea but as a character: God is true, Jesus came to testify to the truth, the Spirit leads into all truth. From this it draws very concrete consequences for everyday life: speaking truthfully, refusing lies, being honest with yourself, speaking with love rather than harshness. These 20 verses, quoted from the World English Bible, are read in five stages: the truth that comes from Jesus, the God who is true, plain speech, truth spoken in love, and then the life that conforms to it. You will find here food for your conscience, but also a way to heal a damaged relationship with truth, when you have lied or been deceived.

The truth that comes from Jesus

1. John 1:17

"For the law was given through Moses. Grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ."

John sets two stages of salvation history side by side. The law was given through Moses, but "Grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ." He does not oppose law to truth: he announces that the fullness of what God wants to show has been revealed in a person. Read all of John 1.

2. John 18:37

"Pilate therefore said to him, “Are you a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice."

Before Pilate who questions him about his kingship, Jesus says why he came: "I should testify to the truth." His kingdom is not imposed by force. It is recognized by those who love the truth and listen to his voice. Read all of John 18.

3. John 16:13

"However when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak from himself; but whatever he hears, he will speak. He will declare to you things that are coming."

Jesus prepares his disciples for his departure by promising them the Holy Spirit. He calls him "the Spirit of truth," who will guide them into all truth. He will not speak from himself but will recall what he hears from the Father and the Son. Truth is received in dependence on the Spirit. Read all of John 16.

4. John 17:17

"Sanctify them in your truth. Your word is truth."

In his prayer before the cross, Jesus asks the Father to sanctify his disciples. The means he indicates is clear: "Your word is truth." Holiness is not manufactured by willpower, it grows through contact with the Word of God, which puts us in the truth. Read all of John 17.

A God who is true

5. Psalm 25:5

"Guide me in your truth, and teach me, For you are the God of my salvation, I wait for you all day long."

David is in distress and acknowledges his limits. He prays to be guided: "Guide me in your truth, and teach me." He does not claim to possess the truth, he asks for it. An attitude of humility toward what is true begins with accepting to be taught. Read all of Psalm 25.

6. Jeremiah 10:10

"But Yahweh is the true God. He is the living God, and an everlasting King. At his wrath, the earth trembles. The nations aren’t able to withstand his indignation."

Jeremiah contrasts Israel's God with the idols the nations make. Idols are hollow objects, whereas "Yahweh is the true God," living and an everlasting King. God's truth is recognized by the fact that he is real, present and alive, while false gods are illusions. Read all of Jeremiah 10.

7. Psalm 119:160

"All of your words are truth. Every one of your righteous ordinances endures forever."

The psalmist has meditated at length on the Word, and he draws an unreserved conclusion: "All of your words are truth," and his laws endure forever. What God says does not change with fashions. You can build your life on it without fearing it will prove false. Read all of Psalm 119.

8. Psalm 51:6

"Behold, you desire truth in the inward parts. You teach me wisdom in the inmost place."

David prays after the gravest fault of his life. He understands that God is not satisfied with correct behavior: "you desire truth in the inward parts." He asks for a wisdom that penetrates to the innermost. Being true before God means ceasing to play a role. Read all of Psalm 51.

Speaking truthfully and refusing lies

9. Proverbs 12:22

"Lying lips are an abomination to Yahweh, but those who do the truth are his delight."

Proverbs contrasts two behaviors before God. "Lying lips are an abomination to Yahweh," while those who do the truth are his delight. The text is not limited to words: acting truthfully also means doing what you promised and not deceiving by your actions. Read all of Proverbs 12.

10. Ephesians 4:25

"Therefore putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor. For we are members of one another."

Paul explains to the church in Ephesus what it means to leave the old self behind. A first concrete demand: "putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor." The reason given is deep: we are members of one another, and lying amounts to hurting ourselves. Read all of Ephesians 4.

11. Zechariah 8:16

"These are the things that you shall do: speak every man the truth with his neighbor. Execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates,"

God promises his people to return and dwell in Jerusalem and tells them what he expects in return. "speak every man the truth with his neighbor," and render judgments of truth and peace. Truth here serves justice and the common life of the city. Read all of Zechariah 8.

12. Colossians 3:9

"Don’t lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old man with his doings,"

Paul speaks of the new life as a garment you change. The instruction is brief: "Don’t lie to one another." The reason is that the old way of living has been stripped off. Lying belongs to the old garment, candor to the new. Read all of Colossians 3.

Truth spoken in love

13. Ephesians 4:15

"but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him who is the head, Christ,"

Paul describes a church growing in maturity. He gives the method: "speaking truth in love." Neither truth without love, which wounds, nor love without truth, which flatters. Both together bring us closer to Christ, the head of the body. Read all of Ephesians 4.

14. 1 Corinthians 13:6

"doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;"

In the famous chapter on love, Paul lists what love does not do and what it does. He says it "doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth." True love does not excuse evil, it stands on the side of what is true, even when it is costly. Read all of 1 Corinthians 13.

15. Proverbs 27:5-6

"Better is open rebuke than hidden love. The wounds of a friend are faithful, although the kisses of an enemy are profuse."

The wise writer compares what does good and what flatters. An open rebuke is better than a hidden love, and "The wounds of a friend are faithful." A friend who dares to say an unpleasant truth acts for your good, whereas flattery can betray. Read all of Proverbs 27.

16. 1 Peter 3:15

"But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts. Always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear,"

Peter writes to minority Christians, sometimes mistreated. He asks them to stay ready to answer those who question them about their hope, but "with humility and fear." Defending the truth is a service rendered to someone, not a victory to win over them. Read all of 1 Peter 3.

Walking in the truth

17. John 4:23-24

"But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such to be his worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."

To the Samaritan woman, Jesus explains that the place of worship matters less than its quality. The Father seeks true worshipers, and "those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." Truth here means sincerity, far from empty rites. Read all of John 4.

18. 1 Timothy 2:3-4

"For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and come to full knowledge of the truth."

Paul urges prayer for everyone, including authorities. He gives the reason: God our Savior "desires all people to be saved and come to full knowledge of the truth." Truth is therefore not a privilege reserved for a few. It is offered to all. Read all of 1 Timothy 2.

19. Psalm 15:2

"He who walks blamelessly and does what is right, and speaks truth in his heart;"

David asks who can dwell in Yahweh's presence. The answer begins with a way of living: the one who walks blamelessly, does what is right and "speaks truth in his heart." Speech that matches what one thinks is a trait of those whom God welcomes. Read all of Psalm 15.

20. Proverbs 23:23

"Buy the truth, and don’t sell it. Get wisdom, discipline, and understanding."

A father advises his son not to treat truth as a negotiable commodity. "Buy the truth, and don’t sell it," he says, with wisdom, discipline and understanding. It may cost a lot, because it sometimes requires giving up an advantage. It is worth the price. Read all of Proverbs 23.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Bible say about truth?

The Bible presents God as true, his Word as truth and Jesus as the one who came to testify to the truth. It calls us to speak truthfully, to refuse lies and to speak the truth in love. The Spirit of truth guides us into all truth (John 16:13).

Why does God hate lying?

Because God is true and does not lie, and because lying destroys trust, relationships and justice. Proverbs 12:22 says lying lips are an abomination to him. Ephesians 4:25 adds that we are members of one another: lying damages the body.

How can you tell the truth without hurting?

Ephesians 4:15 proposes speaking the truth in love. Choose the right time and place, talk about what you have observed rather than judging the person, and begin by praying. 1 Peter 3:15 recommends humility and respect: you defend the truth to serve someone, not to defeat them.
