20 Bible Verses for Students Facing Entrance Exams in Japan: From Anxiety to Trust

9 min read

Introduction

From winter to spring, Japan lives through entrance exam season: for high school, then for university, with the national exam in January, each school's own tests, interviews and the announcement of results. Students and families swing between hope and dread, and many visit shrines to ask for success and buy amulets. The Bible does not guarantee success. It gives peace in anxiety, support in effort and God's love whatever the result. These 20 verses, quoted from the World English Bible, are grouped into four themes: anxiety, perseverance, trust in God, and his plan beyond the results.

In the Midst of Anxiety

1. Isaiah 26:3

"You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you."

You will keep whoever's mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you. Before an exam it is normal for the heart to shake. That is why it is better to keep a firm trust in God than to torment yourself over the result. This verse does not promise success, but a peace kept whatever happens. Read all of Isaiah 26.

2. Matthew 6:34

"Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient."

Don't be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself; each day's own trouble is enough. An exam candidate can be crushed by the future. Yet what matters is to concentrate on today's work. Leave tomorrow with God and do your best today. That is enough. Read all of Matthew 6.

3. Psalm 4:8

"In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety."

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety. The night before an exam, sleep is hard to find. Pray with this verse without hurrying. Even if sleep does not come, you can at least rest your body calmly. Read all of Psalm 4.

4. Psalm 62:1

"My soul rests in God alone. My salvation is from him."

My soul rests in God alone, my salvation is from him. Peace of soul comes not from marks or rankings but from God. When you rejoice or despair over a mock exam result, this verse reminds you that your worth is not measured by your scores. Take a moment each day to wait on God in silence. Read all of Psalm 62.

5. Psalm 23:4

"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. An entrance exam can feel like a dark valley with no end in sight. Yet God walks with you. On the way to the exam room, say this verse again, calmly. Read all of Psalm 23.

The Strength to Keep Going

6. Galatians 6:9

"Let’s not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up."

Let's not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season if we don't give up, Paul writes. Daily study is quiet and lonely, and results are slow to show. This verse does not guarantee success, but it encourages you: God knows your sincere effort. Read all of Galatians 6.

7. 1 Corinthians 15:58

"Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord."

Your labor is not in vain in the Lord, says Paul. Even if you do not reach the school you aimed for, the habits and strengths you have gained stay with you. The result alone does not measure the value of effort. God knows the road. That certainty helps you keep studying. Read all of 1 Corinthians 15.

8. Proverbs 14:23

"In all hard work there is profit, but the talk of the lips leads only to poverty."

In all hard work there is profit, but the talk of the lips leads only to poverty, says the proverb. It teaches the value of patient work without promising success. Take care of each day's small steps and do your best. God sees that sincerity. Read all of Proverbs 14.

9. Hebrews 12:1

"Therefore let’s also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with perseverance the race that is set before us,"

Let's run with perseverance the race that is set before us, the Bible urges. An entrance exam is like a long marathon. Lay aside every weight and run at your own pace. You are surrounded by witnesses: family and church friends who are praying for you. You are not running alone. Read all of Hebrews 12.

10. Psalm 90:17

"Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us. Establish the work of our hands for us. Yes, establish the work of our hands."

Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us, and establish the work of our hands. Offer to God the hand that holds your pen. Established work does not necessarily mean the result you want; it is a request to be led on the best path. Pray like this before you study. Read all of Psalm 90.

Walking in Trust

11. Psalm 121:1-2

"I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from Yahweh, who made heaven and earth."

I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from Yahweh, who made heaven and earth. Before entering the exam room, when tension makes your mind go blank, lift your eyes to God. Help does not come only from your head. Breathe and pray. Read all of Psalm 121.

12. Psalm 127:2

"It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil, for he gives sleep to his loved ones."

It is vain to rise up early and stay up late, for he gives sleep to his loved ones. This verse does not despise effort; it teaches that resting is also trust in God. To those who sacrifice their sleep during exam season, we say that rest is part of preparation. Read all of Psalm 127.

13. Psalm 55:22

"Cast your burden on Yahweh and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved."

Cast your burden on Yahweh and he will sustain you; he will never allow the righteous to be moved. A student carries a lot of weight: parents' expectations, comparison with others. In prayer, set those burdens before God one by one. It is not escaping your responsibility; it is sharing its weight. Read all of Psalm 55.

14. Isaiah 40:29

"He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might."

He gives power to the weak, and increases the strength of him who has no might. It is natural to have days with no motivation and no visible progress during exam season. Instead of blaming yourself, ask God for strength. Where your strength ends, he begins to sustain you. Read all of Isaiah 40.

15. Psalm 28:7

"Yahweh is my strength and my shield. My heart has trusted in him, and I am helped. Therefore my heart greatly rejoices. With my song I will thank him."

Yahweh is my strength and my shield; my heart has trusted in him. A shield protects against attack. When mock exam predictions or other people's words hurt you, God is your shield. Put a verse that guards your heart on a card near your desk, and read it when you feel discouraged. Read all of Psalm 28.

A Plan Beyond the Results

16. Romans 8:28

"We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose."

All things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose. This is not a promise of a result that matches your wishes, but the assurance that God can turn every event, failure included, to good. Whatever the result, keep hope in God's action. Read all of Romans 8.

17. Proverbs 19:21

"There are many plans in a man’s heart, but Yahweh’s counsel will prevail."

There are many plans in a man's heart, but Yahweh's counsel will prevail. The more you want a particular school, the greater the disappointment if things go badly. Yet God's plan is deeper than our plans. Keep your plans while staying open to his direction. Read all of Proverbs 19.

18. Psalm 138:8

"Yahweh will fulfill that which concerns me. Your loving kindness, Yahweh, endures forever. Don’t forsake the works of your own hands."

Yahweh will fulfill that which concerns me, says the psalmist. Your loving kindness endures forever; don't forsake the works of your own hands. God made you and does not leave you halfway. Even if the result differs from what you hoped, what God is doing continues. This verse supports you when the result arrives. Read all of Psalm 138.

19. Isaiah 55:8-9

"“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways,” says Yahweh. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."

My thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways, says Yahweh. God leads in ways we do not always understand. Even if you do not enter the school you hoped for, the people and experiences that follow may open an unexpected road. Keep this verse while you wait for the results. Read all of Isaiah 55.

20. Romans 8:38-39

"For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Neither death nor life, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God's love, Paul is persuaded. Passed or failed, God's love for you does not change. A result does not determine your worth. Remember this unshakable love at the end of your exam journey. Read all of Romans 8.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Bible verse suits a student facing exams?

Isaiah 26:3, about perfect peace for the one who trusts in God, and Psalm 55:22, "Cast your burden on Yahweh," are often chosen. Bible verses do not promise success; they are used to encourage and calm.

What does the Bible say to someone who failed?

Romans 8:38-39 says nothing can separate us from God's love. A result is only one part of life and does not tell your worth. If you are discouraged, tell God honestly how you feel, and also tell someone you trust.

How can a parent use a verse with a child facing exams?

A word shared as you see them off in the morning or a short prayer in the evening is enough. Choose words that say "you are loved as you are" rather than words that press. A verse of peace like Psalm 4:8 works well.
