Hidden in Christ: You're Already Seated in the Heavenly Places

Introduction

Pastor René OUANDJI opens his message with a simple question : when you think “hiding place,” what comes to mind? A safe place. A place of protection. A place where no one sees you. That's exactly what the Word declares about you : “Your life is hidden with Christ in God.” (Colossians 3:3)

He's not talking about some future reality. He's talking about right now. You have already been carried into the Kingdom of the Son of his love (Colossians 1:13). You are already seated with Christ in the heavenly places. The problem is that many Christians are still living on the outskirts of this secret place, without realizing where God has positioned them. This message invites you to open your eyes to your position, to the protection it offers you, and to what you must “gather up” now that you are seated beside Christ.

1. A hiding place : a safe place, out of sight

The pastor starts with what everyone already knows : a hiding place is a safe place, a place of protection, a place where no one sees you. As kids we play hide-and-seek there, sure that we're invisible.
He applies it : in Christ, if you truly know Christ, you're in a safe place, a place no one knows, a place no one can see — unless they too have been transformed by Jesus Christ.
Many Christians are hidden by the Word but don't know where they've been positioned. They're still afraid of darkness, afraid of hardship, afraid of battles. Yet the Bible says you're on the earth, but you're not of this earth. You're positioned in Christ, and when you're positioned in Christ, you fear neither the storms of life nor spiritual attacks, “because Christ is your high refuge.”

2. What happened at the cross has already transformed your life now

You can't talk about being hidden in Christ without talking about the cross. And at the cross, far more happened than what we remember at communion.
Redemption and the forgiveness of sins. “In him we have our redemption through his blood.” (Ephesians 1:7) Redemption is the buying back. The forgiveness of sins is the pardon. You owed the price of your condemnation, and someone came in your place.
A door opened into the secret place. You couldn't come near God. The secret place is God's presence. You couldn't enter without sin being forgiven, without being redeemed, because God is holy. Today, when God looks at you, he looks at you through Jesus. That's why you can enter his presence.
The powers stripped. “Having stripped the principalities and the powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” (Colossians 2:15) The authorities and dominions were disarmed so that you could enter the secret place. Don't take the devil's attacks lightly, but also know that he has already been defeated.
A death and a resurrection. “Christ, being raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no more has dominion over him.” (Romans 6:9) The secret place is reserved for those who have died : dead to their flesh, dead to their life of sin, having laid down their old life. If you have one foot in and one foot out, you don't fully enter. A Christian is someone who has died spiritually in order to live in Christ.

3. You've been extracted into the heavenly places

“Giving thanks to the Father, who made us fit to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light; who delivered us out of the power of darkness, and translated us into the Kingdom of the Son of his love; in whom we have our redemption, the forgiveness of our sins.” (Colossians 1:12-14)
The word the pastor holds onto is translated — carried over. Since you accepted Christ, you don't have to wait for his return to be in his presence. You're already in the heavenly places. You've been evacuated, extracted, the way you'd extract someone from a danger zone.
He gives the image of a head of state being pulled out of a bunker and flown to safety in the United States. The world does this for its own. God, in all his power, did far more : he saw you right where you were, drowning in the world's pleasures, lost in the devil's grip, and he extracted you to set you in the heavenly places, seated beside Christ.
This isn't a poetic image. It's your actual position. “We're on the earth, but we're positioned seated with Christ in the heavenly places.”

4. Your dual citizenship and your heavenly passport

The pastor announces a “great revelation” : you have dual citizenship. American and heaven-American. Ivorian and heaven-Ivorian. Cameroonian and heaven-Cameroonian. This isn't a joke : it's a spiritual status.
He compares it to diplomats who carry two passports. With their diplomatic passport, they pass through everywhere, skipping the usual checkpoints. You too, with your heavenly passport, pass through trials, principalities, and authorities. “It bears the color of the blood of Jesus Christ.”
When you understand this, you walk with assurance, with peace, with praise — not because you're strong, but because you know where you are. Jesus Christ isn't up in heaven all alone, far from you : you're already seated next to him, and he's with you spiritually.

5. A reserved place, a hidden treasure (Job 28)

The pastor opens Job 28:1-8 to highlight what God has set apart. There are silver mines, places where gold is refined, veins pulled out of the dust. Man finds all of that through his own ingenuity.
But Job specifies : “That path no bird of prey knows, neither has the falcon's eye seen it. The proud animals have not trodden it, nor has the fierce lion passed by there.” (Job 28:7-8)
God has given people access to a great many things. But there's one reality that stays veiled to those who don't know Christ : this secret place. Before your conversion, the things of God probably seemed philosophical, or even sad, to you. Since you've been in Christ, this place has become your treasure.
It's reserved for God's children, but it's offered to everyone. “As many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God's children.” (John 1:12) If you haven't received Christ yet, this place is open to you today.

6. Why does God hide you in Christ? Three reasons

a. To protect you spiritually

The first reason is protection. Don't take the reality of spiritual attacks lightly. The devil doesn't first go after your job or your family : he comes to steal your assurance in Christ. That's what's really at stake.
The pastor tells the true story of a Malian pastor — then a Muslim and the son of an imam — who came to kill a pastor in his office. For weeks he came armed, asking for meetings with him. Every time he tried to reach for his gun, his arm froze. He eventually listened to the Word, was converted, and now tells the story himself. “The church can be attacked, pastors can be attacked, but we know who our defender is.”
Psalm 91:1-2 and Psalm 27:5 say it : “For in the day of trouble he will keep me secretly in his pavilion. In the covert of his tabernacle he will hide me. He will lift me up on a rock.” You dwell in the shadow of the Almighty when you remain in his shelter, in his presence, in his Word, and in the practice of his Word.
The pastor also addresses a word of love to any Muslims listening : the God of the Bible isn't some superstitious deity you ward off with amulets or an evil-eye charm. He's the Creator God of heaven and earth, the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, who loves you and truly protects you when you're hidden in him.

b. To shape you, like Moses

The second reason : God hides you to shape you. Moses is hot-tempered ; he kills an Egyptian and flees. God sends him to the man who will become his father-in-law. For years, he learns patience, humility, trust in God. Then God sends him out.
You may find yourself placed somewhere no one sees — not even your pastor, not even your brothers and sisters. A place of solitude where only you know you're with your God. Don't spend every “why” unanswered : why did I lose my job, why do I feel so alone, why this trial? Remember : he hides you to shape you.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10) To walk in those good works, you have to be shaped first. God wants to transform your character into the image of Christ. That's why he sets you apart.
Every man and woman of God has gone through this. Don't refuse to be hidden. It's not abandonment — it's an investment.

c. So that you gather what's above

The third reason is the sermon's central message : “If then you were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth.” (Colossians 3:1-2)
Many Christians are waiting for Christ's return to enjoy spiritual gifts, the fruit of the Spirit, the power of God. “When Christ returns, it will be too late” : your character won't have been transformed, you won't have served. But you're already near Christ. The things above are already there, within your reach.
“Gather it up.” That's the phrase the pastor keeps hammering home. Gather up the gift of knowledge, faith, miracles, prophecy, goodness, faithfulness, peace, joy. They're right there — not so far away.
He paints the picture of the mango trees from his childhood in Cameroon. In season, mangoes would fall to the ground. You had to do zero work : just bend down and sort the sour ones from the sweet ones. Same for you : just bend down and gather, because you're already seated next to Christ.
And he warns you : we're often “spiritual gluttons.” We fill up on the Word, we fill up on blessings, but what do we do with them? Gather for yourself, yes, but also to evangelize. The Gospel reached the ends of the earth because the apostles received spiritual gifts and used them. The world needs to see the power of God.

Is there a season of setting-apart God is walking you through right now — a place where no one sees you? What will you do with that solitude : run from it, or accept it as the training room God has chosen?
