Forgiveness is the beating heart of the gospel: "forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32). It is not excusing or forgetting, but releasing the debt — the Greek word literally means "to send away, to set free." Whoever forgives opens two cages: the offender's, and their own.

Jesus sets no ceiling: "not seven times, but seventy times seven" (Matthew 18:22). And God leads by extravagant example: he casts our sins "into the depths of the sea" (Micah 7:19) and removes them "as far as the east is from the west" (Psalms 103:12).

Frequently asked questions about forgiveness

Is forgiving the same as forgetting and excusing everything?

No. Forgiving means giving up making them pay — not denying the wrong or erasing consequences. You can forgive AND set boundaries, forgive AND let justice do its work.

How do I forgive when the wound is too deep?

By decision before emotion, often in stages, and never without help: God's ("as God forgave you") and sometimes a counselor's. Forgiveness is a road you take again each time the pain returns — seventy times seven.

Can God forgive what I have done?

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us" (1 John 1:9) — with no list of exclusions. Though your sins "be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow" (Isaiah 1:18).
