Proverbs: wisdom for everyday life

The book of Proverbs gathers Israel's wisdom in short, striking sayings, mostly attributed to Solomon. Its keystone is set in the first chapter: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge" (Proverbs 1:7). Not being afraid of God, but taking him seriously — and letting that reorder your life.

Its 31 chapters speak of what fills our days: work and laziness, money, words that wound or heal, friendship, marriage, parenting, anger, pride and humility. One chapter a day for a month is the simplest way through this concentrate of practical wisdom.

Frequently asked questions about Proverbs

Who wrote Proverbs?

Mainly Solomon, whose wisdom was famous (1 Kings 4:29-34), with complementary collections: the sayings of the wise, of Agur (chapter 30) and of King Lemuel (chapter 31).

What does "the fear of the Lord" mean?

Not terror, but the reverence that takes God seriously: recognizing who he is and adjusting your life accordingly. Proverbs makes it the starting point of all knowledge (1:7) and all wisdom (9:10).

How should I read Proverbs?

The book has 31 chapters: one per day of the month is the classic rhythm. The sayings are meant to be pondered one by one — better to keep one proverb and live it than to skim fifty.
